For most of the history of this forum, we were able to quote the first post in followups, an ability that we have for all subsequent posts. Many users would like to be able to quote at least a subset of the first post in order to address specific parts of it. There is also a concern that the ability to quote the first post is superfluous and would lead to more off-topic posts. Please vote for the configuration option that you would prefer.

Very often the first post is the most important. There has to be a way to quote it. The off-topic posts will emerge anyways.

It would be good, because - just as you said - many times one only wants to quote a part, a sentence or two from the first post, to answer specifically to that. For most of the history of this forum, we were able to quote the first post in followups, an ability that we have for all subsequent posts. I used to quote it with copy and paste into the editor, like I did it above.Very often the first post is the most important. There has to be a way to quote it. The off-topic posts will emerge anyways.

For quoting the entire starting post, I'm strongly saying no. Longecity is not your typical forum and threads can be 60+ pages long. There will always be users trying to reference back to the original post and will quote the whole thing. Building off what niner said, this will cause confusion and possibly deter from what may be the current topic of discussion in that particular thread.

If the system could be modified to quote just a portion of it, I think it would be a good idea. Or if the first post short like yours, under a certain amount of characters, the ability to quote the entire thing should be permitted.
My idea: have an option for the thread starter to allow the root post to be quotable. Have it off by default and let the OP decide whether or not to allow quotes referencing the starting post.

The system already permits that. When you're in the editor, you just delete the part you don't want to quote.

I realize this and personally it is what I would do; but, not all users are willing to use discretion and instead will choose the easy way and quote the entire initial post. Also of concern, it may be difficult for mobile and tablet users to select and choose the text from within the original post and likely will quote the entire root post.

The quoting of excessive text is a possible problem on all posts, not just the first post, so by this logic, we shouldn't let ANY post be quoted, since it is possible to abuse the capability.
