Some film reviews:
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
It's bad. So very, very bad. Pretty much like the first one, but not quite as fun. Seriously, this is a summer flick. You don't release this when gearing up for award season.
Final Rating: 2/5
I Am Legend
I saw it a few years ago. It was called The Omega Man and had the baddest mofo you'll ever see as the lead. The Island was a horrible remake of Logan's Run and I haven't brought myself to see this in theaters yet.
Final Rating: Shouldn'tHaveRemadeIt/5
Charlie Wilson's War
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Tom Hanks and Mike Nichols do more of what they always do: kick ass. I have the book on a "must-read" list, now.
Final Rating: 4/5
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
I'm not sure if Kasdan/Apatow were trying to spoof on biopics or on satires. Either way, it did not succeed. This is coming from someone that has never been disappointed by either of them (other than Heavyweights). It had funny moments (Beatles scene, Dewey Cox as Dylan) but overall it was just poorly put together. Reilly did a decent job, though.
Final Rating: 2.5/5
No Country for Old Men
Bonafide Badass. Easily the best Coen movie since Fargo.
Final Rating: 4.5/5
Fred Claus
Dobkin had to try to make this movie suck. He followed up Weddings Crashers with this (although, Shanghai Knights came before it). You've got Vince Vaughn, who has charisma on-screen if nothing else...and Paul Giamatti who has some fine chops. It doesn't work, though, and is lacking in pretty much every way.
Final Rating: 2.5/5
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
I dug this one pretty hard. Burton and Depp always bring a very distinct taste to a flick, and this one is no different. Toss in Alan Rickman and it's hard to go wrong. I wasn't really let down by any of the performances, vocal or otherwise. Some great pieces from the musical were left out of the film, but I don't know if it could have been done better in two hours on-screen.
Final Rating: 4/5
Blade Runner: The Final Cut
Blade Runner is one of my favorite films of all time, and this one is pretty much a no-brainer. If you like the original, this one is even better.
Final Rating: 5/5
Battlestar Galactica: Razor
It's no replacement for new episodes, but Razor is good enough to hold me over until Season 4. Nothing that exciting, just more hints to an outcome we all know is coming...
Final Rating: 3.5/5
A book review:
Starting Strength: 2nd Edition
It's hard for me to say that everyone should do something, but this is so good I've got to say it: Everyone that moves a barbell around to improve strength should check this book out. It is not applicable for everyone, but it's damn close.
Final Rating: 5/5
