I saw two Japanese ladies secretly smoking outdoors at a mall where that is prohibited. They were wearing summer dresses and surrounded by high-end shopping bags. I knew they knew it was wrong because they were hiding in the corner and keeping their cigarettes out of sight. I went up to them and said, "Did you know it is illegal to smoke here?" They said in the most gracious manner, "Why no we didn't, thanks for telling us. We'll put this out immediately."
And they did.
I appreciate them taking the time to lie so sincerely. If they couldn't follow the rules, I appreciate them complying right away when asked. Most people who can't do the first can't do the second. Illegally smoking Americans would have a hard time meeting these standards of grace and agility. We can learn something from this.
