I read the article linked to below with interest. "Toxic toothpaste ingredients that make us sick" was written by Michael Edwards of Natural News. He seems to have a pretty good understanding of what could be wrong with some common toothpaste ingredients. I'd stopped using many of them, and feel better for it. Not sure that going without fluoride toothpaste is good for everyone, but that's open to debate.
I don't agree with this guy's ideas on what to use instead of normal toothpaste, because over time baking soda and salt will be too abrasive. A friend used to get pharmaceutical grade chalk powder from a pharmacy. People used to use it to make their own dental powders. That seems to be less available now. I've been using pure Peelu powder which I order from Swansons. It seems like a good choice, especially combined with a children's Xylitol toothpaste I got from the health food store. This particular toothpaste doesn't seem to have anything bad in it. I also have gotten pure Xylitol packets from Swansons.com, mixed them with water and used that as a mouthwash. Xylitol prevents tooth decay and makes your teeth smoother. Don't swallow it; it's artificial sweetener.
