police chief new york oakland seattle occupy
I find the brutal violence against the Occupy protestors to be unacceptable. I would like to add my voice to those who are speaking out about this. I would like to see the police chiefs in Seattle, Oakland and New York City fired.
This is America. People have a right to free speech and a right to assemble. The protestors are peaceful. The police have turned into an angry mob. It makes me really mad that my tax money is spent on something like this.
There is a uniform feel to this repression. The police chiefs in Oakland, Seattle and New York City allowed their men to be used as tools for the corporations and repressive elements in the federal government. This is what I think happened: There were meetings, money was given for weapons (shiny new toys!) "intelligence" was shared about supposed dangers, and obvious agents provocateurs were salted in the crowd. At this point, I would expect more from people with lives in their hands than to fall for this kind of bullshit. Where I live there was a world economic conference recently where police received tens of thousands of dollars of weaponry per protestor.
Although many bear responsibility for this repression, firing the Chiefs of Police could be the most effective way to prevent this from happening again. Unfortunately for them, at the end of the day, all politics are local.
The next time a police chief regards the shiny new toys and panic-inducing nonsense offered to them by the 1% they should be balancing it with a very real fear of losing their jobs.
