In my lifetime, paper ballots were counted by hand. They did this at each polling place with a representative from each party watching. The results were tallied and the box with the ballots was sealed and delivered to the elections office. I think that the results were posted on the wall outside the polling place. There were multiple checks on fraud at every step of the way. Thousands of volunteers helped make it happen.
We need to go back to this to protect the integrity of elections. Electronic voting is too easy to rig.
While we are at it, let's get rid of the Electoral College, a vestige of the age when most people were illiterate. Count the popular vote.
We also need comprehensive campaign reform, and publicly-funded elections.
I support the constitutional amendment that says that money isn't speech.
We need legislative reform in Congress and within each state legislature. Currently each of these bodies is run by a handful of Old Boys and everyone else has to tow the line. I didn't elect my representatives to do what some Old Boy tells them to. There are a variety of reforms that would insure that our representatives could vote their conscience instead of being pressured by corrupt politicians.
If you know of any resources I can direct people to make these things happen, let me know.
