......Went to to a viewpoint overlooking the city to relax in my car. I brought two mini peppermint patties and a pack of gum. I was just about to enjoy my meal when I noticed a little dog running around a parked car. The car drove away leaving the dog behind. It was night and the dog's coloring blended in with the street. I got out of my car to try to catch her. Most animals like me. Not this one. She went towards a car that was starting. I held up my hand to alert them that there was something in the road. Then she went the other way. I went into the park to see if the dog belonged to anyone there. "IS THIS YOUR DOG? IS THIS YOUR DOG?" I yelled. There was no one there. The dog headed out to a busier street. There was nothing I could so. Eventually the owner came back. She was frantic.
.......She said, "Did you see a brown dog?"
......"A little brown dog?" I asked. "She went that way."
......The owner took off, yelling at the top of her lungs, "Riley" "Riley" "Riley" "Riley" Her voice rent the air. She drove around the neighborhood again and again. I always knew she hadn't found the dog because I heard her cries. I was in my car calling prayer lines. In the background, you could hear, "Riley" "Riley" "Riley" "Riley" I felt like I should have been out running around and yelling myself. If I went out looking for dog, it would just run further away because she didn't like strangers. For most of this time I didn't have the owner's number to let her know if I saw him either. I tried calling the Humane Society but they don't answer their phone at night, even though someone is there. Two prayerlines were helpful but a third started quizzing me. I lost patience.
.........."Do you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour?"
.........."Yes."
.........."Do you believe--"
.........."WE GOT A LOST DOG HERE."
.........."This is a prayer line---"
.........."Then you'd best get to prayin. I'm going to go, but dude, you got some messed up priorities." Click.
...........After quite a tour of the neighborhood, Riley appeared back on the scene and entered the walled park where she had been exercising with her owner earlier. A couple in a SUV were tailing her, trying to help out. A man appeared on the sidewalk running, shouting "Riley" "Riley" I motioned him towards the park. I stood in the entrance to the park to act as a human gate. He got her.
............I said, "I called prayer lines and had prayers said over her."
He said to me and the couple, "If I had money I would give it to you." He held the little mixed-breed dog tight to his chest. He tried to bring her up to me but she snarled.
............I stood on the sidewalk and put my hands together. "Thank you God for returning Riley."
