Cloning in Biomedical Research and Reproduction
Starts: Wednesday, May 14, 2003
Ends: Friday, May 16, 2003
Location: Berlin, Germany
This conference will provide the opportunity for intensive discussions on the ethical, legal and socio-cultural consequences arising from cloning technology and its varied objectives. Only by way of a global process of consultation and understanding the necessary preconditions for drawing up convincing limits can be created that will prevent a potential abuse of cloning technology.
Developments in the life sciences have turned cloning technology into a method broadly applicable to humans, animals and plants. Fields of application cover a full range from duplication of DNA molecules, cell multiplication and propagation of tissue cultures to cloning of complete organisms. Therefore, cloning can serve varied purposes in basic research, therapeutic research or even in reproduction technology.
Ethical issues and regulation requirements become particularly relevant when the various methods and purposes of cloning are applied to the human embryo. For this reason the conference will focus on presenting pertinent scientific information and objectives of cloning technology, including human applications.
