Coming up next on the Longecity podcast is an interview with Steve Perry. Steve is an active member here where he's best known for his long running thread regarding his experiments with GDF11.

In 2014, GDF11 was described as a life extension factor in two publications based on the results of a parabiosis experiments with mice that were chosen as Science's scientific breakthrough of the year. Later studies questioned these findings and the full relationship of GDF11 with aging is unclear and continues to be researched.

You can find more information about GDF11 and Steve's research on his website.

The episode is now available on the new podcast page: http://www.longecity.org/podcast/

Interesting to hear about GDF11 results. Steve also lays down a challenge to other biohackers out there. Is there any other substance that reliably improves reaction time in older adults? Anything that works as good as GDF11.

1. GDF11 has pretty much been debunked by further researchers.

2. I have ran GDF11 per the Steve Perry protocol with zero affects positive or negative

3. I know others on Longecity who have ran it with zero affects, positive or negative

If you want something that works then use HGH or HGH secretogogue peptide.

Did you get any testing done? Steve claims (backed-up by data on his website) that nearly everyone who has followed his program has increased reaction time.

Irina Conboy of UC Berkeley is doing some really useful related research and has found a small molecule that can rejuvenate aged brain and tissue. I knew she was looking into young plasma components that might have lead to the rejuvenation of mice. An article was recently published in the oncologist outlining her most recent findings. TGF beta1 is a pathway that seems to cause aging. This small protein molecule that Irina Conboy has found can alter this pathway in such a way as to reverse aging. She has developed a drug. She says "it's no cure for aging but does take us one step closer to being able to combat it". Why don't you interview her?

Back then I was heavy into weight lifting and getting huge. There was zero weight gain. Zero strength gain. Zero endurance changes. Absolutely nothing. This guy claims he put on 5lbs of muscle doing nothing. Mm hmmm... Sure. I have comprehensive blood tests going back a number of years. There was zero positive effects on any of my blood panels. Absolutely nothing at all. In fact it was around that time that my egfr numbers got worse and I had myself tested further to find out my kidneys were fine but the numbers skewed by the bodybuilder diet and lifestyle. So gdf11 had zero effects on blood panels and zero effects that were noticeable by myself.

There were no flashes of red light or whatever this guy tried to say was a side effect.

Gdf11 is barking up the wrong tree. No one should waste money on it.

Over the counter peptides will have greater benefit on your health that gdf11 which is very similar to myostatin (a bad thing) .

Do you know of any recent research into GDF11? I am aware of the past back-n-forth between Conboy and Wagers. But I haven't heard much lately.

I will be interviewing Steve for the podcast....to get an update. Can you think of any good questions that would help get to the bottom of the issue?

There's a big difference between faster reaction times and age reversal

On the other hand youthful reaction time would be a fantastic thing to have at old age. Are there drugs that reliably shorten reaction time?

But what if the small molecule Conboy found makes everything youthful reaction times included

Steve also said he put on muscle mass went up 5lbs and endurance was improved. Funny because I recall him saying that the muscle mass just basically happened by doing nothing at all other than taking GDF11.  There are people who can't put on 5lbs of muscle in a year of going to the gym. No one gains muscle by doing nothing. At minimum you need to change your diet and eat more calories and do cardio to keep the weight gain from being fat. Run the numbers on how many calories, fat, carbs, and protien is required to gain 5lbs of muscle. Someone doesn't just inject themselves with something and muscle mass grows without added calories and nutrients. GDF11 is also very similiar to myostatin which inhibits muscle growth. I think the guy is seeking is 15 minutes of fame.

When you break it down, piece by piece, the numbers don't add up.

There are others or were others on this site who ran GDF11 without seeing anything.

Reaction time can also be increased by stimulants. Reaction time can also be improved in the "old" by begining an exercise routine which has been found to reverse some effects of age on the brain.

From what I read. Steve was also trying to open up an anti-aging clinic someplace. Funny how money and wild claims always go hand in hand.

Although I too am sceptical of the large improvements reported by Steve from the addition of a single protein, just because GDF-11 did not assist your weight training Rocket does not prove this is not an important anti-aging molecule. Given you were already heavily into weight training, it is unlikely you would be suffering from the loss of muscle satellite cells that GDF-11 is purported to remedy. And although the gain of 5lbs of muscle mass from the addition of GDF-11 alone does strain credulity, from the start point of an aged individual suffering from muscle wasting, I don't think we can entirely discount this.

Mind - I would ask Steve what OTHER blood borne signalling molecules he is aware of or suspects may be important in how the body communicates its aging 'state'.

The new Perry/GDF-11 interview is now uploaded. Not a whole lot new in the podcast. Steve is still healthy and active. Biomarkers are good.

I asked him about the "gaining 5lbs of muscle just sitting around". He said, no that he doesn't sit around, and it must have been a mistake when he said that.

He also wanted to add a couple of important points that did not come out in the podcast.

Forgot to mention that BPH and cardio hypertrophy reversal are most likely due to GDF11 re-activating HOX genes, which is another exciting aspect of GDF11.

Also, I misspoke a bit since GDF11 is a low level “infrastructure” peptide whose MOA is repairing stem cell DNA.  So it surely works the same in men and women.  However, men have more sexual issues later in life like ED and BPH, which I hear about  all the time.  And GDF11 does do a decent job of reversing ED and BPH.

A study out today should help rehabilitate GDF11 after some of the scientific controversy.  I always had a bit more trust in the pro-gdf side simply because I'm a foolish optimist.

If you want something that works then use HGH or HGH secretogogue peptide.

That's actually an interesting read. It seems that there is question about whether the assays used by the debunkers were valid for what they were testing and the quality of available GDF11 on the market.

The latest research I can find seems to point to a very narrow window for anti aging effect which is influenced by a number of factors, age, drinking/smoking, personal genetics... I'm not surprised that a one size fits all approach doesn't catch every one, but there certainly do seem to be people who do get significant measurable effects which is always nice.

HGH has its own issues and question marks. I wouldn't blanket recommend it any more than GDF11.
