I've only read the abstract so I may have missed something, but if I understand it right, they did not test the podt-covid patients before their infection. So indeed epigenetic age acceleration could be a consequence of Covid infection, but it could be a cause also (a cause of infection as opposed to being asymptomatic), or both.

SARS-CoV-2 infection also impairs mitochondrial function:

My opinion is the inflammatory cascade that results from the initial Immune Response to Covid is responsible.

Covid infection elevates MTORC1 signalling in lung cells.

"Consistent with these changes, SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the activity of mTORC1 in cell lines and lung ALI cultures."

https://www.nature.c...467-021-22166-4

There is significant evidence that inflammatory cytokines CAUSE TELOMERE SHORTENING, and MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION independent of and caused by MTORC1 elevation.

The massive cytokine storm and persistent hyperinflammatory state from Covid infection is well documented.

This also supports the MTORC1 & inflammation driven Theory of Ageing. And is a cautionary tale to guard against inflammation and MTOR activation.

A short infection causing massive inflammation -- seemingly aged people several years or possibly a decade.
