125-Yr-Old Varanasi Man Reveals His Secrets of Longevity | TheHealthSite.com

He told IANS news agency, "I wake up at 3 am and go to the Ganga River for a bath. Then I do Yoga. I eat very simple food with little or no oil and spices. I come from a very poor family and till date, I never had a full diet. I eat only half of my appetite. It keeps reminding me of my humble background,"

Yoga instead of sleeping and a few simple foods per day.

Can he be legit? He doesn't seem to be looking for publicity otherwise it's likely we would have heard of him already.

The sort answer is No. The oldest verified man in the world is 112. The oldest woman ever 122. If this person would be 125, how could nobody have notice during the last 13 years?

People in India are probably not followed medically like in first world countries, so who knows. There needs to be an investigation.

When you have an population like India you are bound to have more older people. India likes to claim they have a lot of really old people because it fits in their religious narrative. But I think a big reason for his age might be because of living a relaxed life (too much in the sun, bad or not bad depending on who?) style and a combination of fasting and going to that toxic river makes your immune system stronger. I think he might have lived as long regardless of his life style to some extent, he's not living the healthiest life possible and I wonder could he have lived longer and looked & felt even better. Doing things that are bad for your health, a negative, is beneficial when combined with a positive like eating healthy and exercising both work together.

According to the Hindu tradition, when you touch the feet of an elder person, you are in turn blessed with knowledge, intellect, strength and fame

I don't know but given the diet he has, I doubt he can recover from much stress though, he must rely on minimum stress and calorie restriction I guess.

Also meditation has been shown to lengthen telomeres and relaxation techniques can reduce epigenetic aging. Perhaps he's become really good at it.

Potential reversal of epigenetic age using a diet and lifestyle intervention: a pilot randomized clinical trial (nih.gov)

Twice-daily breathing exercises that elicit the Relaxation Response were prescribed for stress reduction. It was recently demonstrated that 60 days of relaxation practice designed to elicit the Relaxation Response, 20 minutes twice per day, could significantly reduce DNAmAge as measured by the Zbieć-Piekarska clock in their group of healthy participants (though not in their ‘patient’ group) [21]. Almost a quarter of the DNAmAge CpG sites (85/353) are located in glucocorticoid response elements, pointing to a likely relationship between stress and accelerated aging. Cumulative lifetime stress has been shown to be associated with accelerated aging of the methylome [22]. Zannas et al. also reported that dexamethasone, a glucocorticoid agonist, can advance the DNAmAge clock and induce associated transcriptional changes. Dexamethasone-regulated genes showed enriched association of aging-related diseases, including coronary artery disease, arteriosclerosis and leukemias. Other findings include that PTSD contributes to accelerated methylation age [23]; and that greater infant distress (lack of caregiver contact) is associated with an underdeveloped, younger epigenetic age [24].

If the story is true..

I doubt very much the claimed age. Lying to gain prestige is common in all societies and they were not very good about keeping records in most countries. Ms calment who claimed to be 122 at death was debunked. She assumed the persona of her mother in order to gain an inheritance and other benefits

Very short, the age of death of Jeanne Calment is probably real https://en.wikipedia...m_regarding_age

Very Easily. The country has 1.38 Billion people, and still has vast underdeveloped areas with little oversight where much of the populace lack documentation.

That said, it IS within the realm of believability; considering the lifetime of caloric restriction causing chronic MTORC1 inhibition.
