With sadness, I see it is likely time to hang up the zinc oxide sunscreen as a main sunscreen as it degrades..

A NEW study here shows that zinc oxide becomes toxic after a couple hours of sun exposure.

This sucks. I always used ZO as my main sunscreen for UV protection... Assuming that it DOESN'T need to be reapplied due to the fact we all thought it does NOT become toxic or degrade the way other filters do. I guess we were wrong... Bummer...

Thoughts?

If this is true and we are all about ageless looks, then switching is super important.

Yeah, I think I'll go with the fact that sun damage is obvious. Unlikely to find a perfectly safe sun screen, so much as just finding one that hasn't been tested yet, but the sun damage >> sun screen damage.

If you are under 60 and you expect rejuvenation therapies to arrive in less than a decade, then the effects of sun damage should not be that big of an issue. Wear a white, loose fitting, long sleeve shirt and wide brim hat when you are outside.

I have been wearing zinc sunscreen back and forth with Heliocare sunscreen with fernblock (what ever that is) and I have a difficult time comprehending that they just disovered Zinv SS can become toxic after being in use for what, a hundred fuckin years? Really?

Wait a second, I did a cursory gloss over of the content of this article and I see rat and zebrafish assay studies using nano-particle sized zinc? That's not the zinc that is recommended for long wave UV protection anyway.

I don't see anything conclusive of the degree nor type of toxicity caused in HUMANS here.

People have been using Zinc sunscreens for 100 years. Come on.
