Adding Turmeric to my diet

I have a partially used 400 gram bag of powdered Turmeric that expires 6/2024. I stopped taking it because of the taste at some point but now feel like I could re-introduce it to my diet. What's the best way to use it? I'm thinking a tablespoon mixed in a protein shake with a teaspoon of black pepper (for bioavailability of curcuminoids) could cover the taste to some extent. Is tablespoon / day enough to get the benefits of Turmeric? does it have enough curcuminoids?

 

How do you take your Turmeric? I guess I could use it as a spice in rice dishes etc. too.  :)

I like curry, so I put it in soup and other dishes. Turmeric has a different flavor that I don't like as much as curry, so I don't use it much.

 

I also take curcumin supplements.

For this plant, I personally wouldn't trust supplements to provide the benefits you get from eating tumeric.

Except for the black pepper portion, I would take a supplement of that.

 

I suggest: a bioperine extract from black pepper

and whole tumeric/tumeric powder. Consumed at the same time, or wait a few minutes to consume the tumeric. I mix around tumeric powder in a glass of juice/water, and chug it down quickly with more juice to chase.

I don't like the taste of tumeric in most dishes, though I can get it down.

Curry does taste much better than plain turmeric.

 

How much turmeric powder do you take AdderallTumeric4us? Is tablespoon enough for health benefits? I think orange juice could work for chasing it down.

Made a "health shake" of two scoops chocolate-flavoured whey protein, tablespoon of turmeric, teaspoon of black pepper, tablespoon of maca and tablespoon of greens powder. Didn't taste good but drank it quickly so whatever.  :-D

 

I think well-formulated curcumin supplements have decent evidence base, but I do wonder if there's more to turmeric than just curcuminoids, that could provide broader range of health benefits.

 

Found a capsuled turmeric product that contains: 1 capsule contains: 600mg turmeric and 5mg black pepper (95% piperine). Would be handy way to take turmeric if one doesn't like the taste, but it's quite expensive €17.90 / 150 capsules so bulk turmeric powder is much cheaper.

That would be cool, that sounds like it could be tasty. I'd try that.

 

For the purpose of being certain that I'm getting the benefits tumeric is known to have for centuries, I like to put 3 full spoonfuls of tumeric powder in a cup, stir it up (most of it dissolves well in the water)

Have a capsule of black pepper extract (as opposed to consuming black pepper which would taste pretty terrible IMO beyond food-grade amounts)

Chug the tumeric. Chase it quickly down with orange juice as you said.

 

Is a tbsp enough? I don't know - I have the quantity I have just because I don't mind the process.

Yeah I'll need to try the Golden Milk recipe, would be a tasty way to enjoy the benefits of this wonderful plant.

 

Curcumin content of turmeric appears to be between 1 to 7 percent. I guess a tablespoon would be something like 10 grams so it would provide 100-700 mg of curcumin. Should be enough I think, along with the possible co-factors.

 

Yup I should get some black pepper extract capsules, it seems to be good for bioavailability of various things. Consuming a teaspoon powdered black pepper indeed isn't particularly tasty.  :-D
