I started using Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) again for anxiolysis, mood lift, mild euphoriant and sociability improving benefits.

 

High quality Kava seems to be quite expensive these days, so I wonder if there is some way to potentiate Kava so you would need to take less, or if there is some other substance that would synergize with it.

 

I think a teaspoon of black pepper potentiates my instant Kava, but can't say for sure yet. I'll need to experiment more. Years ago I combined Kava with Passion Flower and it seemed to increase the sedative and mood lifting effects.

I have been using Kava (Pacific Elixir) for a week now and really liking the effects. The main benefits for me are a relaxed and optimistic state of mind with a noticeable increase in my social energy. There is also a slight euphoric effect, which is nice. 

I have also been pondering on the possibilities to potentiate the effects of Kava. Adding valerian root seems potentiate It's sedating effects. If I recall correctly both work on the GABA-A receptor, so thats not a surprise in that regard. The sedative effect with these two is not too strong for me, so I can use them in the daytime. 

I haven't tried black pepper yet. Whats the possible mechanism behind It's effects with Kava?

Would be nice to find a way to prolong the overall effects of Kava.  I usually mix 30g with 300ml of water  and drink 100ml in one setting. With this, one 100ml "shot" gives me a peak effect within 30minutes while the overall effects last for an hour or so. There is also a mild afterglow at the end. 

Overall, Kava has been a great find for me. Easily one of my favourite anxiolytics and a great tool if you need a bit of a boost for social gatherings.

Black pepper (mostly piperine) is a bioavailability enhancer of various substances, not just nutrients but medications etc. So that gave the idea to my hypothesis that it might potentiate the bioavailability of kavalactones too.

 

Yeah the effect of Kava dose lasts about one to two hours, not sure yet what could be done to prolong it. Plenty of smart minds in LongeCity so maybe we can figure something out  ;)

I think the black pepper works, I took a dose of Kava over two hours ago and still feel it quite nicely!

 

I read on Kavaforums.com that fat may improve absorption of kavalactones as they are fat-soluble. Maybe a tablespoon of coconut oil could mix well with Kava?

 

Tried some combinations too:

 

Alcohol - a pint of beer added really nothing to the Kava experience, I'd rather take more Kava than throw alcohol to the mix.

 

Nicotine - increases the euphoriant properties but decreases sedation and empathogenic side of Kava. Don't really like it, but if Kava makes you excessively drowsy then perhaps it's ok to chew some Nicotine gum.

 

I wonder if Harmala alkaloids would enhance the Kava experience in a pleasant way.

I wish Kava was cheaper and longer acting, it's my number one herbal anxiolytic and mild intoxicant. I crave less alcohol or Lorazepam because it just gets the job done without side effects.

 

We need sustained-release Kava fellas!

 

Currently I've been drinking herbal infusion of Lemon Balm, Chamomile and Lavender. It's smooth but effective but I need like 4 teabags to really feel it. Could go nicely with Kava I think.

Pretty sure Benzos are the closest thing to long-acting Kava. Never tried them, but they seem almost too effective and too addictive. Shame tho, we ought to be investigating analogues and derivatives of kavalactones since it's a semi-endangered plant that is difficult to cultivate indoors.

 

It's strange that magnesium citrate doesn't have much effect on you.

 

Lemon balm and Magnolia were two of the "gaba safe" recommendations by ScienceGuy iirc. I strayed away from most GABAergic herbs for this reason. Kava seems to be the only one that actually upregulates GABA receptor sites.

 

Maybe I'm being too dismissive of things like chamomile, lavendar, and valerian.

Yeah benzos do get the job done but have consequences. I've heard of candle wax working to make stuff time-release but not sure about that. Would be nice to see what synthetic derivates of kavalactones would do, some methyl-kavain or something whatever the chemists could come up with effectively tingling the right receptors  :cool:

 

Magnesium doesn't do much for me, I would like to try the l-threonate form though.

 

GABAergic herbs have never gotten me in trouble, but often do tend to be weak to moderately effective at best.
