I just watched the pilot of the new Bionic Woman television show which is going to be on NBC. (starting September 26, evidently; here is a link to the torrent of the leaked pilot episode that I watched, for anyone interested) I thought it was pretty good, and had a lot of transhumanist concepts about nanotechnology in how they rebuilt the lady and all the "superpowers" that she had afterwards. Of course it is sci-fi, but some of the stuff that they did for her might not be that far off.

I think shows like this are good for getting people ready for what will become reality in the future.

I've got the VCR set.

I first noticed this series due to an advertisement in Scientific American: which means that eventually advertising will get to me!

Wrong replacement parts though. She may kick ass but she's not going to live longer than normal. The cardiovascular and immune systems are the first weak links we need to tackle for longevity.

Should have checked ImmInst earlier, I did want to see it--will try to catch it next week then--same place, same time?

They do use nanobots at one point. Like I said (and you can tell from the date of the start of this thread) it has been a couple months since I saw it, but I think that I remember they called them something else. It is not exactly believable, but they are trying to make a tv show, not a documentary. I found it entertaining, anyway. Better than most of the stuff out there.

I think so. You can always download the torrent of the premiere to catch up.

It looks like the pilot will also be shown again on Sci-Fi, USA, and Bravo. The Sci-Fi one is Friday afternoon at 6 CST, I think.

Bionic Woman is blatantly negative about transhumanism. Jaime Sommers is not happy about being upgraded, and thus there is constant angst, anger, and tears, during the pilot. Another transhuman is evil. Despite all the emotion there is not a single character the viewer is allowed to care for.

I thought it was awful.

If it is anything like any other tv series ever made, I am guessing that throughout the series she will learn to be comfortable with her enhancements and even not want to go back to the way she was before. (much in the same way we want these types of technologies to grow on the population as a whole) She will use her enhancements to fight evil as well. You could see glimpses of these things in the pilot, but it will be developed further in future episodes, I feel confident. (assuming it stays on the air and isn't canceled or anything.)

The whole "warrior woman" thing has passed its sell-by date any way. This series would have made more cultural sense in the late 1990's, along with the ones about Buffy, Xena and Nikita. I noticed that fictional warrior women declined in popularity when events in the real world led women to decide that they'd rather have the men do the fighting after all.

Hopefully subsequent episodes are better than this one. The dialogue was clunky at best. The acting was marginally better but fairly flat and emotionless overall.

Bionic Woman is blatantly negative about transhumanism.

Agreed. The mission is to save humanity by keeping these advanced technologies from falling into "the wrong hands" which means anybody but their hands.

True. The bad (naughty girls need love too) bionic woman gets to smoke because they clear the toxins out of the blood stream. They might mop up damage too. Maybe we'll learn more about them in future episodes but there's a good chance these two would outlive the rest of us.

Well, that would fit in with all the old science fiction stories which had people in the 21st Century puffing away.

Anyone seen any more episodes? I haven't, but I will probably wait till near the end of the season and download them all at once and watch them back to back. That is usually what I do.
