I have several bottles of Aniracetam that I purchased a while back and must have misplaced (guess I should have been taking them more so I wouldn't forget where I put them). The expiration date on the bottle reads "Jul/2007" so I'm wondering if it would still be affective for me to take. Also wondering if there would be any potential for harm from taking it past it's expiration date.

I thank anyone who can offer some advice.

As for the original question, it's hard to say how good a powder is based on its expiration date, because without knowing how far out the manufacturer dates their products, it doesn't tell you how old it is.

In general, I think powders should last at least a couple of years, and perhaps longer if well cared for. It really depends on the molecular characteristics, and how much oxygen, heat and moisture it's been exposed to over its lifetime. Changes in smell, color or texture would indicate oxidation or other undesirable changes, but then again, changes could conceivably occur without these indicators.

I don't know if aniracetam is thought to be particularly unstable.

A tale of 3 nootropics...
I had some powdered Piracetam, Aniracetam, and Acetyl-L-Carnitine. Each was in a plastic container with a lot of air. Also I threw in left-over silica Gel packs that I think might help a bit, but would not be enough to absorb all the moisture over time. There were all opened and closed with similar frequency. The Piracetam turned into rocks (as did my Arginine,come to think about it). But it dissolves easily in water and seems to work (and taste) the same. The Acetyl-L-Carnatine absorbs moisture more aggressively and "looks different", i.e., a little changed. I'm still using it but think it really needs better storage. Another brand's powder in a thick plastic ziplocked bag also seems to have absorbed moisture excessively (and even more quickly despite being almost zero air in the bag). Since the effects of the compound are more subtle, hard for me to safe if it is any different. The Aniracetam seems the most stable compound. Hasn't clumped, doesn't seem to absorb moisture agressively, no change in color, taste, etc. On the other hand, Aniracetam is really subtle for me, so hard to ever tell if it is doing anything. But visually and by taste/smell/color is seems pretty stable. I live in the mountains, so cool almost all year, but we get a lot of rain also.

Yeah, ziplock bags aren't entirely airtight. I was storing some self-capped ALCAR in one this summer, and over the course of a humid week (without the bag being opened) they would turn into a soggy mess.
