Alcor has received seven million dollars following final settlement of the estate of a confidential member who was cryopreserved several years ago. The bequest will be divided equally between Alcor's Patient Care Trust and a new Endowment Fund to be created with a maximum legally allowed annual distribution of 2% per year.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AlcorNews/~4/qnpj9sax8Lw

At the 2010 Strategic Meeting, the board and management discussed Alcor's financial well-being at length. The majority of the meeting focused on specific budget cuts, fee increases, and plans for establishing an endowment. However, it was also necessary to discuss those policies and practices which affect Alcor's bottom line. This article is intended to clarify Alcor's grandfathering practice in general, as well as the benefits and limitations of Alcor's Comprehensive Member Standby policy, specifically.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AlcorNews/~4/mnFpUyrju_g

Last year, Larry Johnson and self-proclaimed screenwriter, Scott Baldyga, wrote and started selling for profit the book Frozen, which purported to be about Alcor. The book was published by Vanguard Press. After successfully filing suit against Johnson in 2003 for violating the privacy of Alcor members, Alcor was forced to sue Johnson again in 2009, as well as Baldyga and Vanguard, for publication of Frozen. The lawsuit was filed to obtain damages for the false and defamatory content of the book, to enforce prior court orders and agreements which publication of the book directly violated, and to protect the privacy of Alcor members. After being found in contempt of court for failing to answer for his conduct, an arrest warrant for Larry Johnson was issued in Arizona earlier this year. This was followed by an arrest warrant in his new home state of Nevada. After posting bond for the Nevada warrant to avoid jail, Johnson finally sat for deposition on October 20, 2010. During deposition, Larry Johnson invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 300 times to avoid incriminating himself. Questions which he declined to answer included:http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AlcorNews/~4/eiBnz4ygC2I

Alcor recently acquired its second LUCAS 2 chest compression device replacing the older LUCAS, leaving one assigned to the airline travel kit and one now assigned to the Rescue Vehicle. The LUCAS 2 differs from the original Lucas in that it is an electric rather than a pneumatic device. This eliminates the need to carry or locate a portable O2 supply while on deployment. LUCAS 2 can be powered either by battery alone or using a wall or car electricity outlet. The battery is the latest in rechargeable, Lithium Ion Polymer technology and operates for up to 45 minutes on a single battery. When a battery needs to be replaced, the device does not have to be powered down, only put into the pause mode, and when the new battery is inserted, operation can be quickly resumed, limiting the cessation of circulation. The LUCAS 2 is remarkably quieter to operate, which is very important in a hospital or hospice setting.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/AlcorNews/~4/VtWdTwqjTnM

Gregory Benford: “In the early 1990s it seemed time for a novel that looked at cryonics with a view of how it might play out in our time. I think it’s still time to reconsider the fundamental issues of cryonics, and indeed, of any attempt to live far into the long future before us. It is somewhat misleading to refer to this as a new edition,
insofar as the book appears to be unchanged from the first edition
except for now being under the author's real name rather
than a pen name.
