best magnesium to take and bulk supplier?

greetings fellow life extentionists. i wanted to start supplementing magnesium and was wondering if there was a general concensus on the most effective form to take? also, does anyone know of any good suppliers who would sell me this form of magnesium in bulk?

What are you taking the magnesium for? That will help in determining the most effective form for you.

relaxation/memory improvement i guess. isn't it generally an all around good mineral to supplement?

I take magnesium daily (400 mg) mainly for blood pressure and glucose management. I currently take magnesium asporotate but have taken the glycinate form too.

Magnesium chelate is the best form of the supplement, absorbs better than other forms.

Now magnesium citrate powder for me. I once took it before a workout just to see what would happen and it actually made me groggy to the point where I didn't want to workout...

I found Magnesium taurate and glycinate to be the best forms for helping my tic disorder.

Plan on taking both malate/taurate. Not sure of their bioavailability though. Check here( magnesium bioavailability on others.

I currently take citrate. It makes my stomach bubble and depending on the time of day I take it, it gives a slight laxative effect.

Sometimes it might not rumble your stomach or all-together you may not get this side from it. Unless that's to be expected from citrate.
Just don't try to let out a fart when any of the above happens. Almost had that ruin my day once.

What would be the best form?

Also, I'm taking at this moment NOW magnesium 400 mg twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, but after 2 weeks I get a nasty diarroea with the "fart problems" from the guy above :)
what can I do about that?

Isn't that a bit too much magnesium? Maybe just lower the dosage?

I don't know; it isn't pure magnesium, but mostly magnesium citrate.
Is there a maximum amount of magnesium you can take?

Magnesium citrate is one of the most bioavailable forms of magnesium. I would say that there is a maximum, but you'll have to work that one out. What does the bottle say? It can't hurt to take a little less.

Everyone urges the citrate, but citric acid is a much larger particle than a tiny oxide ion, I can't help but feel that mg per mg magnesium oxide provides more available magnesium than magnesium citrate.

Typically what's on the label is the elemental amount of the nutrient. That's required by regulation in the US at least. So 400mg citrate and 400mg oxide are the same magnesium - you will notice that the citrate is a bigger pill (or more pills).

I started taking "Magnesium Serene" by Source Naturals today (citrate powder). It actually tastes good.

That's correct when talking about pills, but if you buy bulk powders, mg per mg smaller salts provide more elemental magnesium per amount of material. So, for example, 500 g of MgO provides more magnesium than 500 g Mg citrate, and thus doses should be adjusted according to percent elemental magnesium, and, of course, bioavailability.

I read somewhere that magnesium attached to different transporters accumulate at different rates in different organs. I really need to sit down someday and try to find the research. I'd imagine the latest and greatest form, magnesium l-threonate, would be a good illustration of getting into the brain. Since I don't have unlimited funding, I place my bets on magnesium glycinate (amino acid chelate) to give best all around benefit and eventually accumulate to sufficient levels where needed over time.

Magnesium L-Threonate is the best form.

Magnesium Glycinate is the best form on a budget. Warning: Magnesium, like many supplements could be a marketing gimmick, I will post here again after my shipment arrives. :) :-D

What about magnesium-L threonate? There've been some recent studies indicating this new formulation may have superior benefits for brain health.

Its nice to see how well uninformed the people are and being able to write bullshit without a sign of a shame.

Well your question was what the best form of magnesium would be.
First Problem is that you have to consume magnesium bounded and not elemental.
There are two main categories of bounded minerals that are aporpiate.
First: Salts
Second: Chelats

Chelations in this context are minerals that are bounded to aminoacids but not covalent.
Salts are metals that are bounded to none-metals, most of them are anions of acids.
The most bioavailable salts are organic salts.

So salts with a good bioavailabilty would be magnesiumcitrate, -malate and so on.
Im sure there are good magnesiumchelations too, but they are not well researched in comparison with salts.

For example is there a problem with magnesium(bis)glycinate.
Glycine is a gaba-receptor agonist (gaba-a?) and could over a long period lead to a receptor-downregulation.

And there are other things that shouldnt be forgotten. For mold-allergics for example could be magnesiumcitrate a problem.
Citrate is the anion of citric acid. Citric acid today is only manufactured through genetically manipulated organisms, aspergilus niger known as black mold.

Magnesium-L-Threonate has shown to be able to pass better through the blood-brain-barrier, but the study was made from the manufactor of magnesium-l-threonat.
But there are many anecdotal reports that say that it has indeed made a big difference.
On the other side there are indepedent studies about magnesiumsulfate that showed good results too.

Magnesiumoxid has really bad bioavailability. Its an unorganic compound.

And one more important thing is not only the form of magnesium its the quality of the product too.
So trying different brands would be a good idea.

One more thing.
Why did you ask such a question that was answered hundred times on this board? Too lazy to search?

Sorry for my attitude but I know that Im right. I think of this board like a pool of priceless knowledge but like this, this will transofrm to a garbage can of spam...

@Gracie Belle, nice giggle :cool: I did say in my post that L-Threonate is the best form (post #21, Gracie Belle LoL ahha :) :P) but all forms are absorbed same in 24 hours according to the bottom of This Thread, Post #39

I just purchased 6 bottles of Magnesium glycinate 90 vcaps each from Albion labs (the least side fx one) for $25 w/shipping from Swanson distributor. I just had 4g at 7pm, (now 7:23, no noticeable fx yet, reporting l8er).
