I've been having anxiety issues so I started taking a supplement called "Teen Link". Here is the supplement in question so you can see exactly what materials are in it and such:
  • 5-HTP- elevates serotonin production in the brain. Serotonin is a key neurotransmitter that supports focus, uplifts mood, reduces aggression and the craving for alcohol and carbohydrates.†
  • Tyrosine - the depression amino acid and the precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine
  • GABA- the anxiety amino acid†
  • Glutamine- for concentration and memory†
  • Taurine- for normal nerve transmission†
  • B6- a required cofactor needed to activate any amino acid†

It has helped with REM sleep and such. However, my erections are HORRIBLE now. They are extremely weak and pretty much useless. I would never be able to have sex with such soft erections. Before I started taking this supplement they were fine! I am in my early 20's. I stopped taking it for about two days but they haven't returned to normal yet (I am still getting deep REM sleep so I assume that the materials in this supplement are still in amy body). I am wondering if they culprit is possibly the 5-HTP contained in this? Will my sex drive go back to normal (solid erections) or did I ruin myself for the rest of my life by taking this?! I feel like I am going insane just thinking about the fact that I might have caused irreversible damage to myself.

I take 5-HTP on a regular basis (3-5 times per week, 50 mg strength) and have not had this side effect.

It has pretty much come back to a good state already. I just got a bit worried. Apparently other people have this reaction to 5-HTP as well. I'm wondering how the product is worthwhile with the materials combined though? I didn't really notice any positive effects besides a very deep sleep, but I'm not going to risk taking it again in case it could potentially cause permanent damage.

5-HTP and vitamin B6 is a bad combination that creates serotonin outside of the nervous system. This can cause cardiac fibrosis. http://en.wikipedia....or_side_effects

Low libido and difficulty having orgasm (anorgasmia) is a known side effect of the serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Prozac/fluoxetine. Something like having all that extra serotonin
in your brain makes you so "happy" that you don't feel like having/needing sex......

no, that doesn't make you happy, it's just a side effect :)

I've been experimenting with "natural" methods for years now and none really seem to work for anxiety, OCD, etc. Certain supplements have helped in other ways though, but there's little or no satisfactory research on any long term effects and all are basically at your own risk. I'll be reaching out to my doctor about my problems and see what he thinks... the fact that I might have to be put on an "official" SSRI and lose my entire sex drive frankly scares me, though. I don't think any woman is going to put up with that in this day and age.
