Zinc, when exposed to sunlight, creates free radicals which may be greater than that generated by UV itself.

The good news is that the experiment was done in conditions which make it questionable as to how much its results relates to actual use of zinc in a sunscreen. They covered lung cells with zinc and then blasted them with UVR.

Regardless, it's an interesting result--perhaps a worrying one too.

Still much less than TiO2. And coated ZnO has a very little free-radical generation upon exposure to UVR.
It is advisable to use sunscreens with coated ZnO.

One should also note that organic sunscreen actives (AVO, OCR even in the present of stabilizers) have a much higher oxidation in the presence of UVR than ZnO (even uncoated).
