Around a year or so ago I tried flax seed, ground. I can't recall how long I tried it, but it had to be about 4-5 months or so. At the time I was curious if it'd change lipid values at all (it didn't do a whole lot).

But thinking back, I do recall it seeming to help with skin health somewhat. I have seborrhea, and remember it not being a problem at all after I was eating flax for a while. I also noticed my hair had a bit of a 'shiny coat', for lack of a better term.

Would this be from ALA, or lignans or something else in flax seed?

I was thinking of trying it again, but was curious if golden or brown seeds are best? And are there any recommended brands that is easy on the stomach? The main reason I stopped taking it is that it's somewhat bitter and didn't really agree with my belly so much. But I was taking a decent amount, so a smaller dose may not be so belly unfriendly.

I tried Barleans and Beveri. Barleans had darker seeds and was a bit more nutty, while Beveri was finer grained, but also a little bitter. I tried the whole grind them fresh thing, but besides being a pain to do, it still resulted in somewhat bitter seeds. Flax oil may work just as well, but that was disgusting the one time I tried it... my tongue won't put up with that again. I figure the extra fiber from the seeds may not be such a bad thing anyway.

I'll also assume that flax has to be ground to be of any use at all? I'd probably prefer just eating unground seeds, but I expect they won't digest.
