I was just reading about this the other day. Forbes had an article on the debate of eating cheaply and healthfully. I'm a newbie so I can't post links, but just google "are veggies cheap forbes". The article provided a few links that question the common thought that fast food is cheaper.
When I was backpacking in Oz, it was pretty much impossible to go paleo. But that was because I was always on the go and didn't have a fridge. Now that life is more stable, it's ridiculously easy to eat healthy and cheaply. Back in the States, I would buy a $20 boned wild salmon, cut them into 8 pieces, pat them with a cloth to suck out the moisture, wrap them individually in saran wrap, and put them in double bagged air tight zip lock and freeze them. They'd last for ages.
My staple consisted of salmon, sweet potatoes, yams, or potatoes, apples from my parents farm, pasta aglio e olio for lunch, and various veggies. Veggies are the only thing I have to figure out how get cheaply. Anyone familiar with blanching and freezing veggies? Frozen veggies in the US are pretty expensive if you look at price/pound.

One of my biggest struggles in dieting & eating healthy.. It's so hard to just pick something up on a budget and expect it to be healthy in any way shape or form.. :'(
