University of Toronto researchers have developed the first method for ranking genetic mutations based on how living cells read DNA, calculating how likely a mutation is to cause disease.

Machine learning is a scientific discipline that explores the construction and study of algorithms that can learn from data. There are a lot of buzz words floating around in the Data Science space. Machine Learning (ML) is one of the more intriguing of these, and while often brought up in discussions about skills that a data scientist should have, it's also one that tends to be very misunderstood, in part because machine learning is even now far more pervasive than most people are aware of.

In one respect, any time that a programmer writes a program, a computer (we'll use that as our titular machine for now) has "learned" something. The computer will typically take some action (either human or externally initiated, such as a clock reaching a certain time of day), pulling libraries together based upon configuration files and executing them, possibly saving the results of these operations in memory or on physical media such as a hard drive or solid state drive, or sending other information to a network address.

Carreira-Perpiñán has devised an algorithm that intersects applied math, statistics and computer science. It considers each of a mathematical function’s layers on its own, but also coordinates all the functions so they work together to get the desired outcome, whether it’s recognizing objects, recognizing speech and faces, helping self-driving cars, predicting the properties of materials or forecasting the stock market.

For example, the algorithm makes it possible for a computer to look at a picture you’ve taken of Yosemite National Park and, by computing progressively more abstract features such as edges, corners or object parts layer by layer, categorize the objects in the image such as mountains, trees or people — information your brain would come up with before you’ve even had time to snap that picture.

“Each of the steps in itself is relatively simple. Officials of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency (IARPA) in Washington issued a broad agency announcement for the Machine Intelligence from Cortical Networks (MICrONS) program to advance theories of neural computation.

The goal of the IARPA MICrONS program is to create ever more capable neurally derived machine learning algorithms, with an aim to improve the ability to perform complex information processing tasks such as one-shot learning, unsupervised clustering, and scene parsing with near-human-like proficiency.

 

The five-year MICrONS program will have three phases that involve neuroanatomical and neurophysiological studies to improve the understanding of cortical computations underlying sensory information processing. Each phase will lead to a new and increasingly challenging algorithms.

When do we start Resurrecting?

 

 

 

Resurrection of the dead has already started with archaeology and evolutionary biology.

 

It will become a civil and human right. as it becomes clear that technology is going to achieve it.

We will find out the nature of life in it's deepest philosophy to date as death is proven illusion and suffering something that has function & purpose.

 

Converging science and technology will bring QA when we've reached enough complexity.

 

The problem's the same...how to recover information and reassemble a youthful super-functioiung happy human being.

 

The interruption to continuity is not a mayor difficulty as people will be resurrected in groups.

 

 

Quantum Archaeology is a prescience of resurrection of the dead using process technologies due in 20-40 years.Organisms extinct for hundreds of millions of years have already been resurrected in evolutionary biology and historical information is now thought incapable of destruction.
It involves building the Quantum Archaeology Grid to plot all knowable events of the past, filling the gaps by cross-referencing heuristically, and deducing by the laws of science.  Specialist grids already exist waiting to be merged, including cosmic ones with trillions of moving evolution points.

 

The result will be a mega-matrix crisp  enough to describe then simulate the past. Quantum computers and super-recursive algorithms, both in their infancy, may allow vast calculation into the quantum world, and artificial intelligence has no known upper limit. Baring catastrophe it is likely science and technology will resurrect the dead. QA is no way invalidates the need for cryonic suspension where data of the dead are preserved.

 

Information is incapable of being destroyed (Susskind) the universe is time symmetrical..You can run information backwards. If it is a hologram as seems popular in physics, this would support QA as well.

 

Resurrection will make the world sit up.

While some things are impossible, they are only impossible within the limits of the model posed.

Philosophically, death is impossible in the model of general science. It had never existed to the enlightened philosopher. Perhaps there was one.

 

There may be no valid immutable performance of history: nothing is fixed. The past can be rewritten, changed infinite times.

 

Where does that leave identity?  Are you one or many? None? Something else? It cant degenerate to race or groups or the other. Is there then any finality - any final solution? There are none.( Who controls machine intelligence controls history and the battle will start for it in the 2020's). Peace or friction such fore-brains are coming!

 

And the validity of suffering? I feel! I suffer! This is at least real? (there is no such validity for nothing has happened unchangeably).

Princeton Univ. researchers have built a rice grain-sized laser powered by single electrons tunneling through artificial atoms known as quantum dots. The tiny microwave laser, or "maser," is a demonstration of the fundamental interactions between light and moving electrons.

The researchers built the device—which uses about one-billionth the electric current needed to power a hair dryer—while exploring how to use quantum dots, which are bits of semiconductor material that act like single atoms, as components for quantum computers.

"It is basically as small as you can go with these single-electron devices," said Jason Petta, an associate professor of physics at Princeton who led the study, which was published in Science.

The device demonstrates a major step forward for efforts to build quantum-computing systems out of semiconductor materials, according to co-author and collaborator Jacob Taylor, an adjunct assistant professor at the Joint Quantum Institute, Univ. of Maryland-NIST. "I consider this to be a really important result for our long-term goal, which is entanglement between quantum bits in semiconductor-based devices," Taylor said.

My concern here is not the ressurection and free will as much as the question if Socrates would be he himself or just a copy.

I think this is the problem behind many ideas which deal with the reconstruction or repair of damaged brains.

Someon should come up with a test which could determine if a mind is the original or just a copy, if a brain, that got all its tissue replaced by something more durable, has "experienced" death.

I said someone because I have no clue how to do that, maybe by inserting a stimulus which will not reach coscience, and by meassuring the "decay" of that information, but this could be complete nonsense.
