An interesting 'must-attend' meeting in Cyprus.

One-day symposium and get-together of minds to discuss ways leading to the abolition of ageing. Participation is free.

Organised by the ELPIS Foundation for Indefinite Lifespans (www.elpisfil.org), and the Cyprus Neuroscience and Technology Institute( http://www.cnti.org.cy)

The meeting is suitable for pioneers and innovators in the fields of complexity science, evolution, intelligence, cybernetics, medicine and biology, and artificial intelligence. We use a trans-disciplinary approach with our concepts and methods, in order to pursue novel, daring and scientifically rigorous avenues of thinking. The aim is to devise hypotheses, theories and practical methods that address the problem of involuntary death due to ageing.

Subjects for discussion include:
Transposons, epigenetics and DNA
Cell immortalisation
Informational entropy reversal
The evolution of complex systems as a movement against the pull of entropy
Topological phase transitions with relevance to large scale shifts in human evolution
Hormesis and environmental enrichment, biological amplification
Social interactions, Ethics and Communications
Constructing societies which can support indefinite lifespans
Synergistic approaches between evolution, brain, technology and society
Synthetic biology (human and social focus)
Pressure to reengineer the concepts what does it mean to be “alive” or “human” in the computational era in a hyper-connected world

Regenerative medicine, engineering organs, repairs from the "inside"
Mind transfer, digital AI agents, cybernetic approaches

The presented papers and summary of discussion will be published in a mainstream peer-reviewed online publication.
Cyprus at that time of year is an ideal destination with much to see and do. Larnaca (old time Citium) is a sea-side cosmopolitan town, birthplace of Stoicism which forms the intellectual and philosophical basis of modern longevity sciences. Please note that places are limited, in order to enable constructive discussion between attendees.

It sounds like something I would love to attend if I was free to, but first I would require a guarantee from the government that upon entering Cyprus the authorities won't detain me in customs and automatically withdraw 10% of my life savings.

Bloody euro. I mean, what's next, gangs of 'taxation dentists' legally authorised to perform on-the-spot removal of gold fillings from anyone they find having such in random house to house searches?

Now, looking at this from a serious, dispassionate and life extensionist viewpoint would an altered version of this be a good thing for the global economy in general after radical lifespans are practical?

I think as long as we are in a scarcity culture one downside of capitalism will always manifest, that is; a small group of oligarchs at the top who do not or no longer produce anything of value to society themselves and just live off their accumulating interest acting as a tumor in the economy. Quite obviously, the idea of people like the Koch brothers living decades longer and legally being able to act as they do now would be dystopian.

Therefore, perhaps a savings tax of some kind or limited artifical wiemar repblic-era hyperinflation would be required to keep everyone productive to some degree in society for the benefit of all until nanoreplicators come into being.

The meeting was a success and was advertised as 'the first serious attempt to discuss scientific ways leading to indefinite lifespans'. We will hold this meeting yearly, and the next one is scheduled for April 2014.
