I'm tweaking my ADD stack and I'm hearing this is a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine.

I'm considering the 500mg caps.

So if you guys have taken it, did it make you more productive/attentive/ANY effect on you?

300mg N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine by Source Naturals is quite potent. It almost feels like 5mg of dexedrine the first few days. Improved focus is what I usually notice. Never tried the non acetyl form.

It helps.
It keeps dopamine-synthesis form being limited by tyrosine availability.
It's also supposed to, and I believe it's very efficient at this, increase dopamine-synthesis compared to not taking L-tyrosine.

I've also heard it's great for combating caffeine withdrawal.
It provides appetite suppression and allows for effortless prolonged fasting.

All in all, it does what it's supposed to. It's no stimulant, but it allows for greater stimulation.

It's also very practical. Between meals, I can often extend concentration time by just supplying a little more Tyrosine.

PS: Like many others, I can't tell the difference between L-tyrosine and N-acetyl-tyrosine in potency.
Just buy L-tyrosine in bulk and throw back a scoop whenever you need it. It's the cheapest option.

Energizing and focus boosting effects are noticable. Unfortunately, the skin side effects (darkening and growth of moles, sensitivity to sun) are problematic for a continuous use.

Tyrosine has a terrible effect on me: Weird dull headache with worse concentration and mood. Same thing happens when I take too much forskolin. It isn't exactly a headache, but it is the best way I can describe it.

I dont know when, but I take 164mg of tyrosine from time to time. Is Tyrosine and L-tyrosine the same thing? The nutritional information that comes with animal pak says 164mg tyrosine, not L-tyrosine.

300mg of N-acetyl-tyrosine + B vitamins made me slightly anxious for a few hours.

I should add that I'm highly sensitive to supplements - for whatever reason my body tends to overreact to almost everything I take.

2g + 500mg PEA + 250mg Hordenine is awesome. Just don't take that combo every day ;)

what are you talking about ? we have had several posts on this forum regarding acetyl-tyrosine not being able to cross the BBB and to have zero effect compared to plain l-tyrosine. you can search and see, lots of urls to various reports on it. im not sure if you really did experience something or you believe you did....

I tried l-tyrosine a few times.

No mental effect for me. Dull headache a few times after I took it, but not really enough to establish firm causation.

Sometimes I take it with theanine if I am feeling dull or sometimes with other stim herbs when I am feel like I need motivation, but I don't think it is any more help than theanine alone.

I have honestly found herbs and supplements to be very ineffective for stimulants. In the face of weak pharmaceutical grade stimulants, they are nothing. The only supplement class that has any value as a stimulant to me is the racetams, and that is only with pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine + piracetam is by far greater than any supplement stimulant you will try. I would assume it is also good with amphetamines and ephedrine. Even rhodiola is pretty worthless and doesn't have effects that are really any better than placebo. I even tried 3 rhodiola pills with pseudoephedrine and tyrosine, and nothing noticeably different form just the pseudoepherine alone which only has a very mild (even more mild) effect without piracetam. Thats just my 2 cents, though. I guess I should point out that I am pretty insensitive to things like coffee, so YMMV.

It seems that tyrosine is only effective if:
  • the body is not used to it, until it adapts and decreases tyrosine hydroxylase, rendering tyrosine supplementation useless(takes up to 6-8weeks)
  • there is a tyrosine deficit
  • one is taking serotonin enhancing drugs at the same time - they lower dopamine, and that in turn increases tyrosine hydroxylase. So one can supplement with high dosages and still can get a benefit
  • there is a problem with the feedback mechanism for downregulation of tyrosine hydroxylase (pure speculation, but some may have a gene defect that makes this possible)

tyrosine is in general useless (for producing catecholamines) if there is a tyrosine hydroxylase deficit (rare disorder)

keep in mind that tyrosine is also needed for the production of t3 and t4, and I guess it can still increase those independent of the points above (not sure, did not research)

Also keep in mind that tyrosine supplementation tends to deplete the body of sulfur, leading to at least glutathione depletion which is serious.

It also seems to deplete the body of methyl donors.

So if one would want to use tyrosine, he would have to supplement with all cofactors to not get serious long term side effects(those may get depleted too otherwise). Speaking from experience here.

One should NOT supplement with tyrosine if increasing thyroid hormones, dopamine, adrenaline or noradrenaline causes problems.

I never tried straight L-Tyrosine so I can't compare. But when I tried 300mg Acetyl I can say with utmost certainty I felt mental effects. The first few days were very similar to how I felt on 5mg of Dexedrine. I don't know too much physiology but my understanding is no amino acid can cross the BBB and must be transported across. The acyl group is only present to improve absorption in the gut and is removed is how I understood it because straight tyrosine gets destroyed.

So what am I talking about? That I felt stimulating effects from 300mg N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine from the NOW brand. Their forumlation also inlcudes 1250% B6 and 100% folate so if you are CERTAIN this form of tyrosine does not make it to the brain it is possible that the effects I FELT were due to these vitamins.

^ lol 1250% B6 + 100% Folate ? man, how can you not feel effect from those ??
but how about you try straight only acetyl-tyrosine and report then. maybe there is some chance it works...

There was only one time I've felt a definitive effect from L-Tyrosine - in that instance, I went from foggy back to normal in a matter of hours. I don't remember how much, but it was probably 1 g. I'm fairly certain the reason it worked for me that one time was that I was inhibiting norepinephrine reuptake pretty heavily and my diet didn't include [sufficient] tyrosine or phenylalanine. I've never taken mega doses or even taken it regularly. You need to be careful as it competes (if memory serves) with tryptophan or 5-HTP for the same blood-brain barrier transporter, so taking it too often will probably cause depletion of your brain's serotonin.
