A frequent poster in the LongeCity forums, Dr. Marios Kyriazis has agreed to sit down for a podcast coming up on Monday, March 4th.

Dr. Kyriazis has been leading the fight against ageing for a lot longer than most of us. For a little background check this wikipedia page.

As always, please post any questions you have for Dr. Kyriasiz here, and I will ask them during the interview.

Since Dr. Kyriazis has been in life extension advocacy much longer than the rest of us, it will be good to ask him how things have changed...if at all. Does he see a lot of progress? Very little? How much have attitudes about radical life extension changed over the last few decades.

Since Dr. Kyriazis has been all over the world, it will be interesting to find out how extreme longevity is percieved in various cultures/countries.

Dr. Kyriazis is involved in the transhumanist scene as well. I will ask how he views "enhancement", beyond just biological rejuvenation.

I just wanted to amplify on a point we discussed regarding the concept of human longevity. This has two distinct facets:

The first (Life Extension, or Longevity) concerns the natural developmental process, bound by evolutionary constraints which limit the maximum human lifespan to around 120 years. In this case, the survival of the species is ensured through germ-line immortality (the immortality of out genetic material) associated with a perpetual cycle of bodily birth, development and death, and an absolute limit on maximum lifespan. Within this scenario, it is possible to employ strategies and interventions such as nutrients, supplements, antioxidants, cell repair therapies, telomerase, stem cells, genetic manipulation of relevant genes such as TOR, Foxo, Sir etc., as well as other SENS-type rejuvenation techniques (see www.sens.org).

The second (Radical Life Extension, or Radical Longevity) is encountered beyond the intrinsic barrier that limits human maximum lifespan. It is possible that, individuals who have managed to break through this barrier (which is currently 122 years) will be subjected to natural evolutionary pressures that facilitate indefinite lifespan. An indefinite lifespan is a lifespan that is not subjected to the effects of age, in other words the mortality rate as a function of age is virtually zero. Here, interventions based on tablets or injections directed at the individual alone will have a trivial impact on the length of life. It would be necessary to devise strategies which encompass the society and the planet within a framework of mutual/reciprocal co-operation. A highly sophisticated, complex approach will be needed in order to maintain a perpetual correction of age-related damage, leading to radical life extension. This is described by the ELPIs concept (see www.elpistheory.info).

One thing about the audio. It might sound a little hollow or echo-ish at times. It might have been the connection between my place an Cyprus or that Google Hangout does not have as good of feedback/noise suppression as Skype or other Voip services. I applied noise removal during editing an it turned out pretty good.

One interesting point that Marios mentioned is that if we want to be successful in life extension advocacy is that we should make sure we have people/volunteers helping out with things they generally like to do, Sounds like common sense, right, but it is easy to lose sight of.

Another interesting idea brought forth by Dr. Kyriazis is that one can stimulate rejuvenation by challenging the brain - learning new things & being creative. Be sure to have a listen.

During the interview, Marios made an interesting point about agriculture. From the aspect of individual health and vitality, agriculture has probably not been good for humans. It supports a sedentary and routine lifestyle for most people. It is not the same environment in which we evolved - one that required more creativity, was full of more challenges, and honed our individual senses and talents. For society as a whole, agriculture has probably been good, but for individuals, maybe not.
