Should you drink it for 2 or 3 weeks out of the month? Or just for the 2 or 3 weeks?
I read something about this too, you are right, you can't take it constantly. I am going to look  into this. I love the taste and how it feels, I won't want to stop drinking reishi  coffee.
There is chaga too.

 

Has it "calmed the Shen" (energy stored in the heart)
for anyone?

 

 

Water and alcohol extracts of reishi contain different active substances. I don't know if higher doses of reishi are contraindicated, but I've heard that taking medicinal mushrooms together with vitamin C helps in their digestion. Also, I've read that reishi should not be taken continuously for more than 2 months without a break. When I did that I got a bit dried out, and had frequent nosebleeds.

I highly recommend a reishi product that is based on fruit body and hot water extracted. I did a lot of research and many of the reishi products out there are derivative products such as mycelium based or fermented reishi.  Just google pictures on how those reishi are grown.  Many of them are grown in beakers and don't nearly look like a traditional red reishi mushroom.  Others are grown on rice and mostly contain rice in the final product.   Here is an easy to read article on the difference between fruit body and mycelium based reishi from Dr. Carr

In hindsight, I've changed my mind on Reishi. I'll take it in the rare even that I get sick, but it tends to be too serotonergic and that reduces motivation and reinforces laziness. 

 

Also, the kind of mushroom doesn't really matter. The active in them for most purposes of taking it is beta glucans. 

 

There are also extracts of reishi and other mushrooms that can cut the dose down to 1/10th and still be effective.

You usually choose Reishi because of the Reishi specific properties, which all stem from the triterpenes. So choose a dual extract that clearly specifies the % of triterpenes, that's common sense right ?  No hot water extracts, you'd be cheaper off buying a cheaper mushroom extract like Agaricus blazei or so which has a very high level of glucans.
