Hi everyone!
I would like to start taking selegiline. I have read that is one of the best nootropics at very low dosages. However, I'm currently taking 10-20mg of methylphenidate.... what do you think? And what about the food restriction??

Selegiline and methylphenidate should not be coingested. You will become too wired, to the point that you become very ill.

I was not going to coingeste it... I was thinkin in taking 10mg of methylphenidate in the morning (say 7am) and 1mg or maybe even 0.5mg of selegiline in the afternoon (say at 1pm) and maybe 5mg of methylphenidate around 4pm....

thanks for the replay!!

The MAOI effect of the selegiline lasts a couple weeks. You will be co-ingesting no matter what dosing schedule you follow.

That being said... I have heard good things about LOOOWWWWW doses of methylphenidate with selegiline, but there is some risk involved here.

Nobody has any experience with these two?? what if I take 0.5mg of mph one day and the next day, 0.5mg of selegiline the following day I take nothing. And the fourth day I start again with 0.5mg of mph and so on....

Methylphenidate is so expensive! and selegiline is so cheap! Besides I dont need a prescription for selegiline.... :D

Don't mix them, period. Unless you really want a psychotic break.

I am not encouraging anyone to try this combination but I can tell you that it is a lot less dangerous than people here made it out to be. Yes, it is probably not a great idea to ingest MAOIs with dopaminergic stimulants but as long as you are careful with the dosages, and already experienced with stimulants, it is not really that risky.

I have been taking 5mg of Selegiline with 10mg of Focalin (Dex-methylphenidate) for the last two days and I've been very happy with the results. The effects last the whole day and are very pleasant.

Seconded, just be sure to start the dosing very low (hundreds of micrograms) and work your way up. Some people for whatever reason are a lot more sensitive to hypertensive crisis this way than others.

Posted ImageWARNING:

You are NOT to mix methylphenidate with selegiline.

AND: As on the leaflet contained in methylphenidate's bottle, it will say do NOT use MAOI'S within 14 days of taking methylphenidate.

Round Up:
Do not take them together, you also MUST wait 14 days in between taking each as selegiline is an MAOI.

The packet warns of a severe reaction because it is assumed that many MAOIs adversely affect many types of medications. The manufactures of Methylphenidate (MPH) include the MAOI warning to avoid potential lawsuits because the combination is not well studied. If you would point to studies of this severe interaction rather than a packet it would be better.

Why I would suspect someone would be willing to take the two together: (1) MPH causes a rise in blood pressure and heart rate for many people, and there have been studies indicating that selegiline in conjunction with other stimulants lowers blood pressure. (2) Additionally, selegiline prevents the breakdown of dopamine by inhibiting MAO-B. Although MPH is not neurotoxic, excessive dopamine breakdown causes oxadative stress to the brain. Taking selegiline in theory would mitigate any oxidative stress induced by MPH usage.

I would also like to point out though, that I agree with you that it is potentially dangerous and I would not recommend the above to anyone. A hypertensive crisis could easily result from a stimulant + an MAOI. There simply is a lack of information on the two substances in question when taken conjointly to definitively state if the combination is dangerous or not. It would be wise to assume it is! Additionally all of this information is based on former readings and assumptions; I have no first-hand experience with either MPH or deprenyl (selegiline).
