BioPQQ is the next step in mitochondrial energy support supplementation, building on Life Extension's long record of success that started with some of the first CoQ10 supplements.

PQQ stands for pyrroloquinoline quinone, and it's a major advancement in mitochondrial cellular energy. Mitochondria are the cellular energy generators that supply virtually all the power your body requires for a healthy life span.

An abundance of published studies underscores the critical importance of the mitochondria to overall health, especially as we age.

PQQ Caps with BioPQQ help support healthy mitochondrial function.

A portion of the product description has apparently been taken from a Life Extension product... Seems kinda disreputable.

This is new - slightly cheaper than the Jarrow product from the UK seller... not sure if you can order from the US, though:

Unfortunately for those of us with Amazon prime, the Swanson product isn't on it yet. So taking into account the shipping, Dr's Best is the most cost effect equivalent for me at the moment.

They ship to Europe, it's costly though.

Any idea how heavy the Swansons product is? I'd like to file #3 capsules and add PQQ to my stack, but at lower doses than 20mg, considering that even the healthiest diet brings you up to 1mg.

The total weight of all capsules in the bottle comes to a total of 600 mgs of PQQ with an unknown amount of filler thrown in. The filler is most likely titaniumdioxid, for what it's worth.

It's impossible to tell how much the content of each capsule weighs.

Filler in the Swanson product is rice flour, it's under the ingredient list. TiO2 shouldn't be used as a filler, it's only a colourant for opaque capsules in tiny amounts. I discovered this product, which I tend to like more: http://www.swansonvi...qq-mind-30-tabs , I am pretty sure the filler in the tablets is not reacting with the PQQ, whilst rice flour probably does to some extent or once dissolved in the stomach or jejenum. One can probably cut each tablet easily in quarters to come up with 5mg.

Overview paper:
"Regarding typical exposures of free PQQ, as noted above, the amount for humans is estimated to vary from 100-400 μg daily,11,25,28,67 about the same as
the daily nutritional recommendations for biotin and folic acid, respectively. However, PQQ easily forms condensation products upon interaction with amino acids,
26 complicating the precision of such estimates. The primary condensation products are imidazolopyrroloquinoline (IPQ) and imidazolopyrroloquinoline derivatives
with attached amino acid side chains as part of the chemical structure. For example, only about 15 percent of the PQQ is present in free form in biological fluids
such as human milk, while 85 percent is present as IPQ and derivatives.26 Thus, it is not unreasonable to assume that for humans the total exposure to PQQ derivatives
may be as much as 1-2 mg per day."
http://www.researchg...609e366fa89.pdf

Another source (mice study):
"PQQ was readily absorbed (62%, range 19-89%) in the lower intestine, and was excreted by the kidneys (81% of the absorbed dose) within 24 hr. The only tissues that retained significant amounts of [14C]PQQ at 24 hr were skin and kidney. For kidney, it was assumed that retention of [14C]PQQ represented primarily PQQ destined for excretion. For skin, the concentration of [14C]PQQ increased from 0.3% of the absorbed dose at 6 hr to 1.3% at 24 hr. Furthermore, most of the [14C]PQQ in blood (greater than 95%) was associated with the blood cell fraction, rather than plasma."
http://www.ncbi.nlm..../pubmed/1850522

So, in summary 5mg should be safe for long-term supplementation (maintenance, no underlying health issues), is not tremendously more than dietary intake and even at a low absorption rate of 20% would at least double the dietary intake. Also it cuts down on costs from 0.60$/day to 0.15$/day.

Although from a vendor, Thorne Research, that looks like a pretty comprehensive and well referenced paper on pqq. But I think that particular section speaks more to the maximum amount of pqq in all forms (in addition to free pqq) that might be expected to be found in normal food sources without supplementation. I was able to locate the full-text online and here are some other quotes from same paper regarding human supplementation:

Potential Physiological Importance of Pyrroloquinoline Quinone

For humans and animals, the ubiquitous presence of PQQ in common types of bacteria, soil, and plants suggests constant exposure to PQQ. PQQ has been found in all plant foods analyzed to date. In this regard, it is interesting to note that although many bacteria make PQQ, this is not the case for common intestinal bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. Escherichia coli can synthesize PQQ-dependent enzymes capable of utilizing PQQ under certain nutrient limiting conditions; however, the enzymes only become functional when PQQ is present. Hence, an external source of PQQ may be important in sustaining human and animal tissue levels of PQQ, as well as maintaining an optimal enteric environment.
...
Safety studies for PQQ in humans have been conducted in preparation for several human use patents. PQQ was administered at 20 or 60 mg/day for four weeks to two groups (10 each) of healthy adults given either a PQQ supplement or a placebo. These studies were double-blinded and conducted at two different commercial drug-testing facilities: the New Drug Clinical
Center, Fukuhara Clinic, Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan and Cronova Co., Ltd., Suminoeku, Osaka, Japan. No adverse effects were observed in standard clinical tests at either dose (e.g., glucose, triglycerides, and various lipoprotein fractions). Functional tests for liver toxicity were also normal (e.g., aspartate aminotransferase and serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase). At 60 mg PQQ daily, the amounts of urinary N-acetyl-β-(D)-glucosaminidase activity were also within the normal range. N-acetyl-glucosaminidase is a renal hydrolytic enzyme located primarily in the lysosomal fraction of the renal tubular cell. Abnormal changes in renal tubular function or damage results in its elevation in urine.

Check out "Table 1. PQQ as a Redox Cycling Agent". They say it has an estimated 20,000 catalytic cycles compared to 800 for quercetin. Wonder how it compares to c60 in that regard.

I also thought it was quite interesting that the paper notes pqq being present in interstellar space dust. And that it might be a key ingredient to the inception of life on earth.

Four weeks of safety data in 10 patients is nothing. Based on that, I wouldn't increase my long-term PQQ by up to two magnitudes (i.e 60mg a day vs 0.4 to 0.6mg/day) and still feel good about it. On the other hand, there's enough good data to add it to the stack, so 5mg looks to me like a good compromise.

Another consideration is that sometimes overdosing can reduce the efficacy. I recall having seen a study for melatonin where it was shown that there is an ideal dosage, even though the drop when going higher wasn't dramatic.
