So I've been reading up on the worlds oldest woman Jeanne Calment and I've noticed some interesting ideas about how to live that long:

A documentary film about her life, entitled Beyond 120 Years with Jeanne Calment, was released in 1995.


Has anyone got a copy of this?


Calment's remarkable health presaged her later record. At age 85 (1960), she took up fencing, and continued to ride her bicycle up until her 100th birthday. She was reportedly neither athletic nor fanatical about her health.[10] Calment lived on her own until shortly before her 110th birthday, when it was decided that she needed to be moved to a nursing home after a cooking accident (due to complications with sight) started a small fire in her house. However, Calment was still in good shape, and continued to walk until she fractured her femur during a fall at age 114 years 11 months (January 1990), which required surgery.


Bicycle riding seems to be a key here, I've also noticed with other older women that they tend to like bicycling aswell.

I've personally taken up the hobby.

In 1896, at the age of 21, she married her double second cousin, Fernand Nicolas Calment, a wealthy store owner. Their paternal grandfathers were brothers, hence the same surname, and their paternal grandmothers were also sisters.[6] His wealth made it possible for Calment never to have to work; instead she led a leisured lifestyle, pursuing hobbies such as tennis, cycling, swimming, rollerskating, piano, and opera.[2]


So if I remain unemployed and happy, regularly go out with friends and have good fun, I should be alright?

Calment smoked from the age of 21[citation needed] (1896) to 117 (1992),[2][16] though according to an unspecified source, she smoked no more than two cigarettes per day.[17] After her operation, Calment needed to use a wheelchair. She weighed 45 kilograms (99 lb) in 1994.


This has to be a key factor!? Mentally Nicotine helps people, maybe E-Cigarettes can help people out and let them last this long?

I've bought some olive oil soaps and am going to test them out on my wrinkly hands/body. olive oil, is probably the reason why photos of her look something like this:

Calment ascribed her longevity and relatively youthful appearance for her age to a diet rich in olive oil,[4] and rubbed onto her skin, as well as a diet of port wine, and ate nearly one kilogram (2.2 lb) of chocolate every week. Calment reportedly remained mentally intact until her very end.[4]


What kind of chocolate was it, does anyone know? I'm sure its not dark chocolate or anything, the copper poisoning would be too much.

I personally love chocolate, NOTHING else has kept me going for so long mentally and be able to put up with lifes shit for so long than chocolate has, its an awesome anti-depressant, I think that the coco and sugar mix of chocolate helps me mentally to a great degree. But I've had to quit eating it almost completely because of the risk to developing diabetes.


So we have in summary:
Possible calorie restriction, contradictory to her chocolate intake?
Regular Exercise
Long Term Unemployment due to spouses wealth.
Regular fun/games/activities
1kg of chocolate a week
bathing yourself in olive oil and having it with meals?
having 2 ciggys a day?
Being french she also probably had an intake of red wine and cheese, and walked everywhere to get her fresh fruit and vegetables.

Is it possible for me to attain this wonderful lifestyle? If so then how can we as a group of people try and attain this?

I'm considering living her lifestyle.

#1, Taking up smoking again, but its too damn addictive, is there any means of limiting my intake? Maybe I could build a machine which will do this for me.

#2, I'm considering eating chocolate again, how much exercise would I need to do inorder to be able to eat 1kg of chocolate a fortnight/week? What kind of chocolate do you guys think she was eating?

#3, What kind of olive oil do you guys recommend, I'm in Australia so it needs to come from the shelf of our stores, I will get you guys the brand names of the canned olive oils when I am there again.

French people eat three balanced meals a day. They do not fast or follow fad diets. They eat plenty of quality healthy fats and oils, like olive oil and organic dairy. Although Jean Calment smoked a few cigarettes a day, generally they harm your health and you can't be sure you'd have that much self-control to stop at two or three. So, I'd avoid those. French people look for a sane, balanced lifestyle.

Yep, everything in moderation.

You're not kidding in regards to the damage that nicotine and its toxins can do to you. And after 2 years of the most intense abuse that my body could handle with nicotine, and then quitting it 3 times, and finally kicking the habit after nearly having a heart attack. I still miss it.

The most addictive substance known to man, is legal, and alcohol isnt far off being the most damaging drug ever made. Yet its still legal.

I'm not sure if I could suitably restrain myself or make a machine which could make myself and then trust myself to not find a way to hack it.

But its still a better option than the crap that the psychs peddle for 'anti-depressants' at the nut factories.

There may still be better options to get the effects I am looking for, maybe not as readily available in a country that bans almost everything but they exist.

She had very good genes.
The olive oil helped, so did the wine and the exercising.
Please don't start smoking.

Everything you say about France was true 10 years ago.
Today? They are the 2nd most americanised european country after England.
They eat fast food almost daily, obesity is on the rise, and they do follow fad diets; have you heard of the Dunkan diet? -it's a french invention.

Now that I think about it I'm betting she was bragging on that one :)

It kinda makes sense, if you have a slight excess of calories in combination with coco I personally are/am more likely to maintain my exercise regimen, I get a bit more 'pep' out of having coco in my system, and the sugar keeps up my dopamine levels, making things in life a bit more fun than they usually are.

Also ideas and words flow more freely onto paper/screen, ideas come together better, I also tend to make slightly better descisions.

But all of that could be solved with nutrition in other aspects.

Maybe she just didnt have the time to fix a regular diet? Too busy having fun. I like her lifestyle anyway. :)

Her fondness for olive oil has been commented on many times in the C60-OO forum.
I suspect that many women born in the 1870s road bikes a lot, and that they read by candle light, looked at the stars and listened to a phonograph
The fact that she 'claims' to have smoked two cigs a day is interesting, and something I don't remember reading about her previously, possibly bravado. Maybe some hometic effect, like how one drink a day of alcohol has been associated with increased longevity. Smoking is not something I would mimic though.
In the picture of her at age 100, she looks, well about 100 to me, not a lot of comps in that zone. The ones of her at 40 and 80 look youthful but they also look like studio photos, and I discount them accordingly.

She was hot! I imagine she was fun to hang out with, and she was a funny, happy-go-lucky, and probably pretty spoiled person. She was amazing. It was probably fun for her to say she wasn't obsessed with personal health, but I'll bet she was in a fun, cheerful sort of way.

It's not her lifestyle that was magical. As theeconomist said, she just had nearly magical genes. In her cause i'd wager lifestyle had very little to do with her lifespan.
