Sodium Selenite: An Alternative Treatment for Cancers

Alternative cancer treatment: sodium selenite may put chemotherapy-resistant cancers into remission.

I came across this remarkable account of very high dose sodium selenite (a form of selenium) putting a usually incurable cancer into remission.

This alternative cancer treatment grabbed my attention, so I corresponded with the author to learn a little more about this treatment, and discovered that he was diagnosed with an incurable cancer called myelofibrosis (a type of leukemia), and was given only a very short time to live.

However, using an alternative cancer treatment which involved taking very high doses of sodium selenite, his cancer was put into remission. The author told me that several other cancer patients he knows tried the same sodium selenite cancer treatment, and also saw their cancers go into remission. These patients continue taking very high daily doses of sodium selenite, and remain alive and healthy.

The patients trying this alternative cancer treatment typically took a total daily dose of 5000 mcg (= 5 mg) of selenium as sodium selenite. This was taken in two divided doses, 2500 mcg in the morning, and another 2500 mcg in the evening, always on an empty stomach (selenium is much better absorbed on an empty stomach).

I don't have cancer myself, but I was intrigued by this alternative cancer treatment, and so I decided to search the PubMed medical database for studies on the anti-cancer effects of sodium selenite.

It turns out that there are quite a few medical studies on the various anti-cancer effects of sodium selenite. Thus sodium selenite is not an unsubstantiated alternative medicine cancer treatment, but is an alternative anti-cancer agent whose mechanisms of action are reasonably well-understood scientifically.

I am writing up all the information I learnt about this sodium selenite alternative cancer treatment, in case this is of benefit to people looking for an alternative cancer protocol to complement their conventional cancer treatment, or an alternative protocol in cases where conventional cancer treatment has failed. Below I summarize the results of the studies I found on the anti-cancer effects of sodium selenite, and provide an overview of the procedure that others have used for taking very high dose sodium selenite as an alternative treatment for cancer. Though none of this should be construed as medical advice. That is my disclaimer.

From reading these studies, my understanding is that sodium selenite works best on chemotherapy-resistant cancers (aka: treatment-resistant cancers, or multidrug-resistant cancers). The reason why sodium selenite works well on these treatment-resistant cancers is explained a bit further below.

Sodium Selenite Cancer Treatment Protocol

As stated, patients trying this alternative cancer treatment typically took a total daily oral dose of 5000 mcg of selenium as sodium selenite, in two divided doses of 2500 mcg in the morning and 2500 mcg evening, on an empty stomach.

I understand that many (but not all) patients using sodium selenite as an alternative treatment to fight cancers also take daily intravenous (IV) infusions of vitamin C (as sodium ascorbate). The intravenous vitamin C dose taken is typically 50 grams daily (each IV infusion bottle contains 100 ml of total fluid, and has 500 mg of sodium ascorbate per 1 ml of fluid). After some weeks on daily IV vitamin C infusions, patients then change to high doses of oral vitamin C instead, 30 grams daily, in 3 divided doses (a reduced oral vitamin C dose may be necessary if bowel tolerance is reached, and diarrhea appears). Bulk quantities of vitamin C power for oral use can be found by searching online. Though note the cautions detailed below about taking high dose vitamin C with conventional cancer treatments.

Once the cancer goes into remission, patients may cut their sodium selenite dose to half: taking a daily total of 2500 mg of selenium as sodium selenite, and continue taking this dose indefinitely. Patients often also continue taking high doses of oral vitamin C indefinitely as well. I did find two studies which describe a synergistic anti-cancer effect between sodium selenite and vitamin C (see below).

Note that this study found when sodium selenite and high dose vitamin C (as ascorbic acid) are taken together orally, the absorption of selenite was reduced almost to zero. So it would be highly advisable not to take oral sodium selenite and oral vitamin C at the same time. This advise does not apply to low doses of vitamin C (as you would find in a glass of orange juice, for example; in fact the study found that low doses of vitamin C seem to enhance sodium selenite absorption).

This sodium selenite alternative cancer treatment is of course not guaranteed, but if you have cancer, particularly a treatment-resistant cancer, then very high dose sodium selenite may well be an alternative treatment worth experimenting with.

Sodium selenite is not to be confused with sodium selenATE, which is another form of selenium. It must be sodium selenITE that you take for this cancer treatment purpose.

Note that a total daily dose of 5000 mcg (= 5 mg) of selenium as sodium selenite is a very high dose of selenium, well beyond the maximum daily recommended intake of selenium, which is around 800 mcg, and even a little above the 3000 mcg of selenium per day that is considered the long term chronic toxic dose of selenite for humans (see Wikipedia article on selenium).

The symptoms of selenium toxicity are: diarrhea, fatigue, hair loss, joint pain, nail discoloration and nausea. However, from what I understand, cancer patients taking a total daily dose of 5000 mcg of selenium as sodium selenite do not experience any side effects, and do not experience the symptoms of selenium toxicity, apart from some nausea when they first start taking sodium selenite. If you build up slowly to the 5000 mcg total daily dose, over a period of a few weeks (which is recommended), you can avoid the nausea. You might start with 1000 mcg on the first day, and then work up to the 5000 mcg total daily dose over a couple of weeks.

Side effects are experienced, however, if the total daily dose is increased beyond 5000 mcg. At a daily dose of 10000 mcg (= 10 mg), vomiting will likely occur, and sodium selenite becomes toxic to even healthy human cells at this dose level. So you don't want to go above the 5000 mcg total daily dose. It is probably a good idea to drink a large glass of water when you take your very high dose sodium selenite, to ensure this supplement is adequately diluted.

Be careful to observe the correct dosing: several people have died from selenium toxicity after taking extreme doses of sodium selenite. In rabbits, the lethal dose (LD50) of sodium selenite is 2.53 mg per kg of body weight. Assuming a similar figure for humans, then the lethal dose for an 80 kg human would be around 200 mg of sodium selenite, as an approximate figure.

Sources of Sodium Selenite

Suppliers of sodium selenite as a supplement:

TwinLab sodium selenite 250 mcg x 100 capsules

Life Extension Foundation liquid sodium selenite 250 mcg x 350 servings

You can buy sodium selenite much more economically if you can find an agricultural supplier to sell you a bottle of sodium selenite liquid concentrate (farmers add this selenite concentrate to cattle feed). Such highly concentrated agricultural sodium selenite is available here. Be careful if you use the agricultural sodium selenite, as it is much more concentrated than the sodium selenite supplements you buy in health stores. Make sure you get your dosing correct.

The Nutritional Oncology Research Institute may also be able to advise you on where to obtain sodium selenite, and provide guidance on taking it.

(Pure sodium selenite is available from chemical suppliers (its CAS number is 10102-18-8), but you should only buy this pure sodium selenite if you really know what you are doing in terms of diluting down this chemical to the right dose. I found four chemical suppliers when searching online: 1, 2, 3, 4. To dilute pure sodium selenite, a good idea is to dissolve this chemical in into 1 liter water, and then administer small measured amounts of this aqueous solution. If you want say 0.5 mg of selenium as sodium selenite in each 1 ml of water (so that a 5 ml teaspoon of this water contains 2.5 mg), you will need to dissolve 1000 x 0.5 mg x 100 ÷ 45.66 = 1095 mg = 1.1 grams approximately of pure sodium selenite powder into 1 liter water, as pure sodium selenite powder contains 45.66% selenium. To reiterate what was stated above: doses of 10 mg (= 10000 mcg) of selenium as sodium selenite will make you ill with vomiting, and a single dose approaching 200 mg of sodium selenite will probably kill you. So with pure sodium selenite, you could easily take a fatal overdose if you don't get your dose calculation right.)

Research on Sodium Selenite as a Treatment for Cancer

In this section, several published studies which examine the anti-cancer mechanisms of sodium selenite are discussed.

This study says that sodium selenite has a great therapeutic potential in treating multidrug-resistant cancer. Multidrug resistant cancer cells usually have a chemical called cysteine on their outer surface. The study explains that sodium selenite destroys these multidrug-resistant cancer cells by virtue of the fact that selenite reacts with the cysteine on the cancer cell, and then forms a new chemical called hydrogen selenide, which is highly toxic, and its toxicity helps kill the cancer cell.

Normal healthy human cells do not have cysteine on their outer surface, so these normal cells remain intact and unaffected by sodium selenite.

Paradoxically, it is the presence of this cysteine on the outer surface that makes cancer cells resistant to normal chemotherapy — cysteine blocks the effects of chemotherapy. But the hydrogen selenide toxin formed when selenite reacts with cysteine is a mechanism by which selenite destroys cancer cells.

So sodium selenite can be effective for treatment-resistant cancers. There are additional mechanisms by which selenite also destroys cancer cells (which will be detailed shortly), but the creation of hydrogen selenide from cysteine seems to be an important one.

Note that cysteine is a type of chemical called a thiol, and there is a general reaction between sodium selenite and all thiols that results in the creation of hydrogen selenide:

sodium selenite + thiol = hydrogen selenide

Now thiols are often found in food, and also found in certain supplements. So it is probably a good idea to take your very high dose sodium selenite on an empty stomach, not only because this supplement is better absorbed that way, but also because selenite might perhaps react with the thiols in your food, and create this toxic hydrogen selenide right there in your gut. This is just my speculation.

Supplements high in thiols include: alpha lipoic acid, chlorella, cysteine, and N-acetyl-cysteine. So you probably would not want to take these at the same time as very high dose sodium selenite.

This study says that selenite's reaction with the thiols (cysteine) on the outer surface of the cancer cell, as well as generating hydrogen selenide, also makes these cancer cells more vulnerable to being destroyed by the immune system. The study details some other anti-cancer mechanisms of selenite, such as promoting an increase in natural killer cells. The study concludes that sodium selenite might become a drug of choice for many types of cancer including leukemia.

This study says that in prostate cancer, selenite prevents the androgen receptors on cancer cells from receiving the signals that would normally promote tumor growth.

This study and this study indicate that superoxide generation by sodium selenite is another mechanism by which sodium selenite destroys cancer cells.

This study looks at how selenite kills the cancer cells in malignant mesothelioma (a rare form of lung cancer).

This study details some more anti-cancer mechanisms of selenite.

This study used a sodium selenite intravenous infusion at dosages of 1000 mcg of selenium mixed into in physiological saline per day. (Note: I cannot see that there is a great advantage in taking selenite intravenously, since the bioavailability of oral selenite is around 50%, which is fine).

This study found that the combination of the chemotherapy drug docetaxel plus sodium selenite may be a more effective prostate cancer treatment than docetaxel alone.

This study found that sodium selenite is potentially useful as an adjuvant chemotherapeutic agent.

There is currently a clinical trial in Sweden studying sodium selenite as a treatment for advanced carcinoma.

Sodium Selenite and Vitamin C have a Synergistic Anti-Cancer Action

Studies on the synergistic combination of sodium selenite and vitamin C for cancer treatment:

This study on a hepatoma cell line (cancer cells studied on a petri dish in a lab) appear to have actually used both selenite and vitamin C (ascorbic acid) together, and concluded that these two compounds have some synergistic anti-cancer effects in combination.

This study concludes that a combination of vitamin C and sodium selenite may be a potent anticancer agent for human gastric cancer.

Note that high dose vitamin C can make certain cancer treatment drugs, such as cisplatin, doxorubicin, imatinib and vincristine, less effective. High dose vitamin C may also interfere with radiotherapy. So tell your cancer specialist about your plans to take high dose vitamin C, especially if you are considering doing so during or within a few weeks of your conventional cancer treatment.

This study documents a case of severe cyanide poisoning in an individual taking amygdalin (Laetrile, vitamin B17) at the same time as high dose vitamin C.

Sodium Selenite Safe Dose Calculations

As mentioned earlier, going higher than a total daily dose of 5000 mcg (= 5 mg) of selenium as sodium selenite is not advised; if you go much higher you will start damaging healthy human cells; and as we will see below, at really high doses, you may start promoting cancer rather than curing it.

Experience has shown that taking oral doses of 10000 mcg (= 10 mg) will make people ill with vomiting, so this is definitely too high a dose.

I also was able to confirm by the following calculation that going much over 5000 mcg will lead to toxic effects on healthy cells:

This study provides information on the concentration level of sodium selenite that causes acute damage to healthy colon cells, and the safe level beneath which healthy colon cells remain undamaged. The study says that at sodium selenite concentrations of 20 microM and below, there was no damage to healthy cells in the colon, but at concentrations of 50 microM and above, there was severe damage to healthy cells.

From these figures, I made an approximate calculation that the maximum safe dose of selenium as sodium selenite taken at one time that will not cause cell damage in the colon was 6300 mcg.

For the technically minded, this maximum safe dose calculation is as follows (everyone else can skip this paragraph). The study states that severe cell damage was observed in the biopsies that were incubated with the higher sodium selenite concentrations of 50 microM and above. Now 50 micromoles per liter = 0.00005 moles per liter, and the molecular weight of sodium selenite is 172.94 grams per mole. Therefore there are 0.00005 x 172.94 = 0.008647 grams = 8.647 mg per liter of sodium selenite in a 50 micromoles per liter solution. Since the sodium selenite molecule contains 45.66% selenium, the 50 micromoles per liter solution works out to 3.95 mg of selenium per liter. Now, the human colon has a volume of about 4 liters, so this suggests that a oral dose of 4 x 3.95 = 15.8 mg = 15800 mcg of selenium as sodium selenite would cause the severe cell damage described in the study. The maximum safe level of sodium selenite in the study was 20 micromoles per liter. This would then correspond to 20 ÷ 50 x 15.8 = 6.3 mg = 6300 mcg as being the maximum safe oral dose of selenium as sodium selenite that does not cause any damage to healthy cells.

So this is why it is advised to take no more than a total of 5000 mcg of selenium as sodium selenite a day, as this dose level should not cause any damage to healthy cells in the colon.

Note also that although selenium compounds have powerful anti-cancer effects, if you take really high doses of selenium, then these effects reverse, and instead selenium compounds will start to display some carcinogenic (cancer causing) effects. Using the results of this this study, I calculated that selenium as sodium selenite acts as a powerful anti-cancer agent up until about a dose of 20000 mcg (= 20 mg), but if you go higher than that, then sodium selenite begins to display carcinogenic effects. Therefore you would want to stay well below this 20000 mcg dose, since you want to cure cancer, not promote it. This is another reason why you don't want to take doses higher than around 5000 mcg of selenium as sodium selenite.

This friend of mine, Ray Crossley, who had Stage 4 prostate cancer
at that time, was on the Budwig diet, along with red clover extract,
10 grams vitamin C, 5,000 iu D3, and 1,500 mg bromelain, plus
7,500 mcg of sodium selenite.

He was taking "Selenium Oral Concentrate". This is not actually
a supplement for humans, but sold to farmers for "drenching" cattle.

http://www.grandever...products_id=452

1 ml contains 10 mg = 10,000 mcg of selenite

Usually 20 drops = 1 ml

He took 20 drops at first, felt "a bit sick".

Reduced to 15 drops = 7,500 mcg, and maintained it.

He weighs some 300 pounds.

The last I contacted him a few years ago, he said his cancer was in partial remission,
with bone metastases disappearing and a falling PSA. He had never gone for chemo,
radiotherapy or surgery.

Minor Corrections and Further Points

I'd just like to make some small corrections and add some further points to my above post on the sodium selenite alternative treatment for cancer.

• CORRECTION: In fact, the original author of this sodium selenite alternative treatment for cancer just corrected me on what I wrote above, and told me that he usually took a single daily dose of 5000 mcg of selenium as sodium selenite all in one go. He would only divide up the dose into two lots of 2500 mcg each day for short periods of a few weeks, if he was experiencing dry retching symptoms from the selenite (dry retching is performing the actions of vomiting without actually expelling any content from the stomach). Taking 2 x 2500 mcg a day instead of 1 x 5000 mcg a day eased the dry retching, he found.

• The author initially took 5000 mcg daily for two years, but once his cancer had gone into remission, he eventually decided to cut the dose down to a dose of 2500 mg once a day.

• The author told me that he knows of one person who has taken higher doses of 10000 mcg a day for over seven years, and another individual who has taken around 7500 mcg daily for a similar period. Both had beaten their cancers. Both have taken blood tests that showed their selenium levels are quite close to normal. But they both say they do not want to stop taking these very high doses of selenite, in case their cancers return.

• The author's GP doctor, after three years of monitoring the author's progress using this sodium selenite alternative treatment for cancer, stated that the author was living proof that natural therapies work and requested his protocol in case this doctor or her family needed it at a later date.

• The author of this sodium selenite alternative cancer treatment tells me that it is important to follow this protocol properly and fully every day. He has seen many cancer patients try this alternative protocol, and has noted that cancer patients who only dabble with this protocol, who don't fully commit to it, or who only take it now and then, don’t fare well on it. You need to follow the protocol properly.

• The original author of the sodium selenite alternative cancer treatment can be reached on info@e-ze.com.au

Blood Levels of Selenium Almost Normal — Even Taking 5000 mcg of Selenium a Day!

The author of the alternative cancer treatment told me that after having taken 5000 mcg of selenium as sodium selenite daily for two years, he had a blood pathology test to measure his selenium levels.

Incredibly, this blood test showed his selenium levels were not so far out of the normal range! His serum selenium was measured at 2.62 umol/L and the normal range of blood selenium is 0.80 to 1.90 umol/L. So his selenium level is just a little over the normal range.

He also had a blood test taken when he was using a lower dose regimen of 2500 mcg daily, and after a few months on this lower dose regimen, his blood test for selenium showed 1.74 umol/L, which is actually within the normal range of 0.80 to 1.90 umol/L.

The printouts for these two blood test results are shown below in this post.

The author told me he took the blood tests while he was still actually on his very high dose sodium selenite regimen (that is to day, he did not stop taking the selenite while having the blood tests done — although he said that the blood tests were performed a good 10 hours after he had taken his single sodium selenite dose for that day).

The only explanation I can think of for these relatively normal blood results is that the excretion of selenium must be very rapid in the body, so that excess levels are quickly eliminated. And in fact, if you look at this study on high doses of selenite experimentally injected into sheep, the blood plasma selenium levels in the sheep immediately went up by 20 times, but then fell rapidly, as the kidneys quickly excreted the selenium out. The blood levels in fact returned to normal just 10 minutes after the selenite infusion in the sheep, which is a very rapid return to normal; however, the level of selenium within the sheep red blood cells remained high for 4 hours, and only started to decline after 4 hours. So it is likely that when people take oral selenite, they temporarily get a great increase in blood selenium levels, but then blood levels quickly go back to normal within a very short time.

Thus it would seem that in spite of these very high dose sodium selenite alternative cancer protocols, blood levels of selenium remain reassuringly normal, or close to normal, even after years taking these protocols.

This is very good news for anyone considering this alternative cancer treatment, as it indicates that these very high doses of sodium selenite do not significantly raise selenium blood levels.

sodium selenite alternative treatment for cancer had performed:

Sorry to resurrect this old thread.

Anyone have any experience with this? I have a parent that is is now in stage 4 of a very widespread adenocarcinoma. Gave him about 3-4 months to live and won't be able to continue on the chemo/raditation path anymore as it will probably kill him.

I was thinking of referencing and trying this as a last ditch effort, though not sure if he's too willing.

Any feedback on this is much appreciated (including the original linked article above).

Thanks!

Read the thread Is 3-Bromopyruvate (3-BP) a Cancer Cure?

Basically, shutting down cancer's energy pathway can be a very successful anti-cancer treatment.

Published human patient reports have shown extremely impressive results in terminal stage patients.

3-BP is now widely available in cancer clinics worldwide.

There are several American clinics that offer it, and some in Germany.

For example,  http://www.dayspring...-cancer-clinic/

If you are at the point where you simply do not know what to do. It would be sensible to let these doctors try and help you.

Hi MercyBuckets. Sorry to hear about your parent. I'm not sure if this is the relevant solution for your situation, but my father has undergone a course of complementary treatment (after completing regular chemo) that really helped him to restrain his stage 3 prostate cancer. Therapy process was pretty simple, but it had really charged him with positive energy and made him happier. He had to live in a specially equipped medical aviary for a few days and take immune-boosting medicine.  Here's more info on this method: http://paseka.us/can...es/skin-cancer/

I'd go with the Dayspring rout if you are reading this thead. Chemo wrecks the immune system for most, and after two chemoz the chances of the big C comming back are still there.
Most people separate the cancer from the normal operations/formations of the body and say it's a foreign entity, that is questionable. I think most forms of cancer are signs of the last ditch attempt of the bodies immune system to handle the break down of other things. I blame the parasites for living in a body that has a compromised diet. I think the region that your patiens cancer is in, is important to the specialist.
I will say that acidity is the main cause of illness and that you can NOT consume too much alkai (although it runs down serrum levels of B vitamins, etc).
Silica is paramount and sublingual B12 can't be bad. When he starts on the enzyme therapy watch for vertigo, the therapy my have to be done not so often.
Olive Leaf is the shizzle nizzle, but it's no good if the patient has nothing complete in thier diet to buit onto the cleaned flesh.
I hate how the iQ drops after chemo, it don't help anyone.
I hope you ask the questions, get agreeable answers, act swiftly, are able to monitor, enforce the changes as a positive thing and get positive outcomes through your choices.
I personally have done the apple seed thing, lipoC, Selenium, Cystine to name a few and contest to thier potency. L-Histidine(there's a few types!!!!) is an important key to
enact immunity as is Gamma E and Molybdenum for the clear up!

Unfortunately that product does not seem to be available - nor does any other good SIRT2 inhibitor seem to be available, but I have only done an incomplete search.

"One of the drawbacks the group must deal with is TM's limited solubility and bioavailability. Lin believes that by improving the solubility and bioavailability in the future, they can improve the TM's anti-cancer effect even further." To me that's a sign that this treatment is many years away from even being trialed.

Interesting, I'll have to look into Sodium Selenite.

An important interview relevant to this discussion with Mark Sloan, a man on a mission and author of several books; The Cancer Industry, Cancer: The Metabolic Disease Unravelled, and Red Light Therapy: Miracle Medicine. His obsessive research is a dissection of one of the darker truths about modernity - that evil is at the root of the cancer epidemic which threatens your life and your loved ones.
