Has anyone ordered from Bimuno, or know anything else about them? I want to buy some pure GOS, not mixed with anything else, and they have such a terrible site. No information on anything, they didn't respond to my message through the site option for contacting them with email, and I don't want to pay 10 dollars to call internationally, it's all a huge pain in the ass. Or maybe someone in the UK has more info?

I'd even go with a different site but I can't seem to find anyone that sells GOS. Only reason I'm even bothering with Bimuno is because someone said on this thread that they sold GOS, and they make a passing mention of it on the site.

Yes, I've ordered from them and am satisfied with their product. It is pure GOS. I consume this, unmodified potato starch and FOS via Quest Bars (17 grams!).

Only the original is pure GOS. The others are for specific uses, and have other substances added, as Memorex said.

What about modified potato starch, is there simply no point in taking that, or is it just less useful? I realize chemicals are used during the production, how harmful are they and how exactly do they counteract the benefits seen with unmodified starch?

The reason I am asking is because I can not seem to find unmodified potato starch here, so I would need to order from overseas.

Second this also, can only seem to be able to buy pure Potato Starch, however, it doesn't mention whether its modified or unmodified.

Can anyone clarify the differences? Would using a modified version cancel out the positive benefits?

Very interesting and relevant video, highly recommend giving it a watch, wish I could find some the strains used in the studies cited.
Also I had no idea "entric neuroscience" was a area of research!

Most potato starch sold is raw unmodified potato starch. Modified starches are mainly used in the food industry and have different properties. The point of taking raw potato starch is that most of it is fermented in the colon. Since there are many ways starch can be modified, the potential benefits depend on how much reaches the colon. Regular potato starch should sink in cold water, if it doesn't you probably want to find another brand.

Is eating behavior manipulated by the gastrointestinal microbiota? Evolutionary pressures and potential mechanisms.

Conclusions

Modern biology suggests that our bodies are composed of a diversity of organisms competing for nutritional resources. Evolutionary conflict between the host and microbiota may lead to cravings and cognitive conflict with regard to food choice. Exerting self-control over eating choices may be partly a matter of suppressing microbial signals that originate in the gut. Acquired tastes may be due to the acquisition of microbes that benefit from those foods. Our review suggests that one way to change eating behavior is by intervening in our microbiota.

I did the Bob's Unmodified Potato starch thing for several months, but eventually stopped taking it daily and switched to occasional supplementation  as it did nothing for me whatsoever.

Clostridium butyricum is a butyric acid producing probiotic.

Biotechnological potential of Clostridium butyricum bacteria.

In response to demand from industry for microorganisms with auspicious biotechnological potential, a worldwide interest has developed in bacteria and fungi isolation. Microorganisms of interesting metabolic properties include non-pathogenic bacteria of the genus Clostridium, particularly C. acetobutylicum, C. butyricum and C. pasteurianum. A well-known property of C. butyricum is their ability to produce butyric acid, as well as effectively convert glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (38.2 g/L). A conversion rate of 0.66 mol 1,3-propanediol/mol of glycerol has been obtained. Results of the studies described in the present paper broaden our knowledge of characteristic features of C. butyricum specific isolates in terms of their phylogenetic affiliation, fermentation capacity and antibacterial properties.

It's available in the product ProBIOTIC3.

Help belay possible concerns about RS. I've heard some negatives about RS, as well. So, YMMV.

Resistant starch: a functional food that prevents DNA damage and chemical carcinogenesis.

Resistant starch is formed from starch and its degradation products and is not digested or absorbed in the intestine; thus, it is characterized as a fiber. Because fiber intake is associated with the prevention of DNA damage and cancer, the potential antigenotoxic, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic capabilities of resistant starch from green banana flour were evaluated. Animals were treated with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine and their diet was supplemented with 10% green banana flour according to the following resistant starch protocols: pretreatment, simultaneous treatment, post-treatment, and pre + continuous treatment. The results demonstrated that resistant starch is not genotoxic, mutagenic, or carcinogenic. The results suggest that resistant starch acts through desmutagenesis and bio-antimutagenesis, as well as by reducing aberrant crypt foci, thereby improving disease prognosis. These findings imply that green banana flour has therapeutic properties that should be explored for human dietary applications.

Do you like the quality of this product? Looking into it as well. Where did you buy it from? (best price so far was for me http://www.pasioingr...&ParentCat=118)

Does that mean you are no longer taking pure RS?

> Do you like the quality of this product?

Yes, but I have no way of objectively measuring changes in my gut bacteria.

> Where did you buy it from?

iHerb.com. I got the swiftest shipping, to minimise the time the bacteria would be exposed to heat.

> Does that mean you are no longer taking pure RS?

I'm eating cooked and cooled rice, daily. Which is RS3.

I've still got some potato starch, and may test with green banana flour. I rejig things all the time, so when I take something out of my regime, it's often temporary.

From what I can tell, too much RS can be bad. RS increases butyrate, which increases tregs. It's theorised that when treg levels are too high, it can result in the immune system being too tolerant. An immune system which is too tolerant may miss cancer cells. It's a balance! Too few tregs and an autoimmue disease can ensue. I've got an autoimmune disease, so I've not looked too hard at the implications of treg levels being too high. I've also started trialling metformin, which may result in low tregs via the destruction of the microbiota (I've read metformin can act as an antibiotic) . So again, more of the opposite problem!

I currently swap between kefir and goat yogurt. I also take jarrow EPS daily for a little extra. I currently don't take any prebiotics but want to start. I'm thinking the hi-maize option might be best however it seems like the majority of people online talk about the potato starch. Anyone take Hi-Maize? I was thinking it might be good to mix it with probiotics in the morning to get a synbiotic effect.

List of Prebiotic -
- Hi-maize RS (Self hacked says it's best) - http://shop.honeyville.com/hi-maize-resistant-starch.html
- Lewis Labs glutin free brewers yeast
- Prebiotin Prebiotic Fiber Prebiotin 8.5 oz Powder (from chicory room which is highest source of RS according to Wikipedia)
- Bobs unmodified potato starch - selfhacked says it gives him inflammation

Prescript Assist blows every probiotic I've used out of the water...also its humic/fulvic addition makes it a dual supplement that really just brings on the well being.

Little expensive, I think I may just try to find some prebiotic separately. I guess another option is FOS powder, http://www.amazon.co...words=prebiotic.

Just wondering if this might be related. I sometimes get itchy eyes. I usually try to avoid itching it but most of the give in. I then noticed that when itching the eyes, my stomach pulls in.

It is is like the enjoyment of itching the eye is felt in the stomach. I don't know if any one have experienced this or have an explanation..

I have done the resistant starch protocol and I will say there was a little improvement such as the vivid dreams, calmness and also during ejaculation. I don't know whether to call it premature ejaculation, but usually when I am about to cum, it is like like a balloon busting and not like for example a slow release from a syringe. On the RS protocol, I felt that slow release,

I started the protocol because I noticed when I take Kyo Greens, my running nose seems to stops. I can't pinpoint which of the ingredients is doing this. I have tried using the other ingredients in other products but didn't get the same effect. One of the other ingredient listed in Kyo Greens is potato starch, so that was why I gave the RS protocol a try.

I am thinking microbiome may play a part in the problems I am having. I also suffer from Night sweats, dehydration, anxiety and panic attacks, and it feels like I can't open my eyes properly as it is quite sensitive. There is also tension all over my body.

Some years ago I used to have problems with my stomach. This includes gas coming out involuntary which made it very difficult at work. Also my stomach used to rumble for hours when I am in bed. I am thinking that was the beginning of the problems.

Any thoughts please?

Regulation of inflammation by short chain fatty acids

SCFAs regulate several leukocyte functions including production of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6 and IL-10), eicosanoids and chemokines (e.g., MCP-1 and CINC-2). The ability of leukocytes to migrate to the foci of inflammation and to destroy microbial pathogens also seems to be affected by the SCFAs.

Like others, I've tried resistant starch via dietary changes, as well as a functional food. Fermentation of resistant starch results in the formation of SCFAs (plus H2 and other gasses). This experiment had some subtle benefits for my chronic inflammatory issues of unknown cause, but wait, there's more.

The role of cytokines in sleep regulation

Interleukin-1 beta (IL1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF) promote non-rapid eye movement sleep under physiological and inflammatory conditions. Additional cytokines are also likely involved but evidence is insufficient to conclude that they are sleep regulatory substances. Many of the symptoms induced by sleep loss, e.g. sleepiness, fatigue, poor cognition, enhanced sensitivity to pain, can be elicited by injection of exogenous IL1 or TNF.

Despite the vivid dreams RS gave me, which is pretty welcome in my case becuase I'm REM deficient, and a subtle initial increase in sleep quality, RS turned on me and made my baseline poor quality of sleep (and thus cognition, fatigue, and the like) even worse. Could it be that trying to modulate the immune system via the gut-brain connection, and thus lowering the CNS production and release of cytokines, NO, and the like, can result in the immune system to upregulate their expression?

Yes serious brain fog and fatigue too. At work it is a constant struggle trying to keep myself awake. I sometimes feel trying to keep myself awake is even more hard work than the job I am paid to do lol.

The brain fog make me feel stupid sometimes and I feel that it is holding me back career wise and on the social front. My face always look like I am in pain, with so much tension.

It could be a gut infection, but sometimes I am also thinking maybe some virus. I do get cold sores about 3 or 4 times a year.I have used various probiotics over the years and feel there have been some improvement. I do not get the involuntary gas as much as before.

About 2 years ago, on one particular day I just found myself feeling better. My eyes opening nice and wide open, my speech was great, I felt quiet peaceful and in a blissful state of well being. It only last for about two days. I don't know what triggered this. The only addition to my supplement  was Metafolin, but I have used it since then without feeling the same effect. I think around that time I was also fasting, but I have fasted since then without seeing the improvement in well being.

I am thinking of taking part in the human gut project and finding out what bacteria I have in the gut.

Thanks for the link.Much appreciated.

Definitely sound like an infection.

If you start researching about chronic infections the first thing that you should get familiar with, is the issue with biofilm.

A gel like material of microbial colonies (like the ones you can find in the gut from good bacteria) that help microbes survive and reproduce in harsh environments.

Thanks very much for the links. It looks like this could be the problem. Another thing which I forgot to mention previously was my balance is terrible. I could hardly stand by the train platform without feeling I am going to fall over. It is affects my walking. I am going to give a Biofilm protocol a go and see how I am feeling. I will report back. Do you any suggestions for supplements which could help?
