I've been looking for saffron dosage for depression. There are a lot of sources that suggest to take 30 mg extract per day :

http://edition.cnn.c...for.depression/

http://www.webmd.com...entName=SAFFRON

http://examine.com/s...ements/Saffron/

The one on examine.com suggest that a dose higher than that could be harmful if taken long term.

Now, I have this saffron capsules from Rebody :

http://jp.bodybuildi...equestid=864626

It said per capsule is 88.5 mg. And it said to take 2 capsules per day. So, is the recommendation on this bottle is much to high? I'm planning to take it long term.

Yes, it is too high. Most saffron supplements are dosed way too high.

I sent the question to examine.com, and got this reply. I will post again when I have more information.

It is hard to give a correct answer here, because the information that is needed may not be disclosed by the company. "Saffron" on a label can refer to any part of the plant, but medicinal benefits are related to the red stigmas (stick thingies in the middle of the plant, which are used as a spice)  with the other parts of the plant not being medicinally used.

30mg of the stigmae is effective, with 60mg of the stigmae in that 'danger zone' which needs more research. That being said, the other parts of the plant don't have this toxicity.

While we can't say anything conclusive, unless the dietary supplement directly states that they are using the stigma then it is possible they are using the other parts of the plant (seen as an industrial byproduct) and marketing it as saffron in hopes of making some money.

wow good to know.

1-2 Years ago I walked in a shop, bought 1 gram and mixed it at home in a choco pudding or soaked it in milk.

The first time was nice, I was kind of happy for no reason. But with the time the effects decreased.

I just wonder whether I´ve done damage to myself.

"Using saffron in food will provide the same effects as supplementation, since saffron supplements are dehydrated extracts of the spice. Saffron does not have a high margin of safety, so care should be taken during supplementation. The standard daily dose is 30mg, used for up to eight weeks. It is possible that even double the dose could result in harm to the body. Further research is needed to determine the safe level of saffron supplementation. Prudent supplementation is advised until more information is available."

Just got some extract (Saffronex ™) with recommended dose of 88.5 mg BID. Seems to be too high, according to the above, at least.  More research ahead....

30 mg of saffron extract 2%safranal is the recomended dosage. There are supplements out there offering a 88.5 mg Of a saffron extract 0.03% safranal which is a very small dosage to help with depression. Please make sure to get the right supplement. I take Omami Mood Farma and it works very well for me. There is lots of informacion online regarding saffron now days.

To the person unsure of Maricelas reply. What she says is that in the extract there can be different amounts of one or more of the active substance. It's like if you're buying bacopa caps. One brand might sell 300 mg caps with 45% bacopacides, while another sells 500 mg caps with 55% bacopacides. Despite the bigger total extract dose, there might be an even higher, or lower, dose of one or more specific substances.
