Hi. I'm going to talk about a bad experience I've had with Noopept in the hope that someone here has a theory or explanation.

I had been taking oxiracetam alone every other day for a week or so. I then stopped and introduced Noopept (10mg daily), to test its effects. I experienced nothing except for vivid dreams and a sensitivity to light. After a week on it, I did a one-hour session watching pornography. I believe this was the trigger. After finishing, I laid down on my couch and started reading. After some 10 minutes I got the strongest headache I have experienced in my life. It's difficult to emphasize how strong it was, but I had 911 on dial and was ready to press "call". I was really fearing for my life. Some hours later I ended up going to sleep. The next day it was gone and I haven't touched noots since.

At this point I'm really, really curious what could have caused this. If anyone has any pointers or theories I'd be very happy. To provide some further background I'm a healthy individual first in my twenties with no real issues. I do resistance training, eat well, and consistently get 7 hours of sleep. I did not supplement with choline, but I did take a few fish oil capsules now and then, plus vitamin D3. When looking at what some people here are taking, I can't believe that just 10mg of Noopept could have this kind of effect? I don't have enough knowledge about neuroscience to come up with a solid explanation, but like I said, any pointers are appreciated!

Are you sure you bought good noopept? HAve you been storing it in a location that is cool?

It could also be low choline. DO you eat a lot of eggs or liver, etc?

Anyways I never though noopept was that great of a supplement. It seems like more of a drug to help people with real brain damage or recovering alcoholics; there is no evidence im aware of that suggests it provides any nootropic benefits to healthy, young individuals.

Thanks for the feedback! I have no way to know if the noopept is good or not. It being bad could very well be the explanation. Yes, I have been storing it in a non-hot, dark place.

I do not eat many eggs, but I drink at least a liter of milk a day and eat lots of liver.

From my experience so far I agree with you. It really had no positive effects for me, but I'm sure that depends a lot on individual brain chemistry.

I had a similar experience with noopept. After I finished having sex I had a headache equivalent to the worst hangover of my l life.  And it also happened to me after exercising intensely.  I no longer take blooper.

Thanks for your input, it's somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one to experience this. I'm just curious why I haven't heard it discussed here before.

It was a combo of triggers. Unlikely related to choline. Sex, orgasm, exercise are known vasodilatory headache triggers, so it makes sense when you add an unknown like noopept to the mix. Both of you experienced headaches close to true migraines, if not actual migraines. From my experiments with noopept I think it can indirectly trigger some vasodilation, and I also think it has greater potential to decrease migraine threshold in predisposed individuals than racetams.

Thank you so much for your input! That would make a lot of sense.

Do you have any idea why Noopept could trigger vasodilation? Also, knowing about this predisposition, are there any nootropics one should be careful with?

I suspect a glutamate issue primarily, but that's because glutamate excess headaches are vasodilatory in nature. The glutamate excitoxicity threshold has many variables; GABA, dopamine, serotonin, aspartic acid, cellular energy, electrolytes, histamine, others.

Noopept is different from the racetams in its mechanism on glutamate. Now, if you look around, you'll see noopept frequently being mentioned as causing less or even preventing headaches, most of this information isn't entirely accurate because 'headache' is too vague, and what is typically being spoken of are acetylcholine related headaches, not glutamate.

I believe glutamate and/or histamine is the culprit behind noopept's known side effect of irritability.

In both cases of headache and irritability, co-occuring low GABA may be a factor. Perhaps low serotonin via temporary dips in serotonin or serotonin sensitivity as noopept is 'wearing off', perhaps only occuring in certain regions of the brain. The same could be said of dopamine, which is a gatekeeper of sorts of glutamate.

Noopept is often believed to be protective against glutamate excitotoxicity. There is a lot of conflicting information and studies. Given the amount of anecodotes I've read, I'm calling bullshit on noopept's glutamatergic neuroprotective properties - I'm not saying it's not at all true, but this is not something that is universally applicable because as I said, the excitotoxicity threshold is highly variable, so noopept is likelier to cause migrainelike or true migraine headaches in predisposed individuals and situations. 10mg noopept may leave you with a punishing headache one day, and nothing but awesome another day.

Nitrous oxide may have been another factor in the headaches occuring around physical and sexual activity. For whatever reason, noopept temporarily made you more vulnerable to a vasodilatory headache. Noopept has no obvious direct effect on vasodilation or constriction, but that isn't terribly useful information since there are many different ways it can have indirect influence.

Everything I've said is highly speculative. Right now this whole topic is speculative. As a migraineur and having a keen interest in learning about neurotransmitters in relation to headaches, I bring a slightly different perspective on nootropics to the table. I really wish we could have designated threads to noots, types of headaches and their various causes where we could all share what little tidbits of info we have and debate the problems. If I'm wrong about something I would like to know since I would personally benefit from that correction.

All I can say about other noots, if you've had this kind of experience with anything then avoid sunifiram until more study has been done on it. It may be fruitful to experiment on yourself with aniracetam and see if you get similar results as with noopept, since their activities with serotonin and dopamine are purported to be similar.
