Hi all,

So, I don't know if anyone remembers or really cares lol, but I've been battling on-and-off bouts of depression for years that could best be described as atypical (mood reactivity to an extreme and leaden paralysis) - I created a thread about it around a year ago I think.

Anyway... I've been off of anti-depressants for close to 6 months (no after-effects remaining at all), and up until a week ago, had been taking Vyvanse (only 20mg) daily for about a year and a half. After reading extensively about Selegiline on here however, and finding numerous case studies on its potential to treat ADD without many of the stimulant side effects, I decided to run it by my family doctor... and he agreed! I now have a prescription for generic selegiline in Canada; 15 5mg pills a month which I take sublingually (half a pill daily)... only costs me 21 bucks a month (in Canada).

I love this medication! It has been giving me the motivation that the vyvanse did, the focus, complete mood stability, and without ANY of the side effects... it is literally the perfect medication. On a side note, the side effect of increased sexual stimulation is no joke either! And I am on suboxone currently, which normally slays my sex drive. I'm loving it! Even at work, I find I am getting more done on the selegiline then I did on Vyvanse (I am a computer programmer), which I partially attribute to the lack of anxiety.

Cutting to the chase:

I would like to know what medications or supplements go well with selegiline? So far, I have been taking B12, SAM-e, and ~750mg DLPA daily with my selegiline, and it has been working out pretty well... but I still feel like I could add to it. I have heard that 5-HTP has greater efficacy when combined with selegiline then when alone? I am probably going to avoid PEA... not sustainable. Any other suggestions? I was thinking of combining with low dose moclobemide and undergoing a very careful trial with a full (half-reversible) MAOI.

Thank you, and hoping to get some responses this time! Thanks!

Some good things with Selegiline are:

Mucuna Pruriens: the whole plant (its extract l-dopa can be dangres w/ selegiline)

Vitamin E: in a study it help raise dopamine level

Fo-Ti: I belive it has some weak MAO-B inhibitor effect

Zinc: in high amounts acts as a DRI, but I belive the effect only lasts a few minutes.

BPAP: it enhances the release of neurotrasmisters including but not limited to dopamine

Ginko Biloba: it raise dopamine in a study, perhaps it has an MAO-B inhibitor effect

Catuaba Bark: also seems like an DRI

The reason 5 HTP works better with selegiline is, because selegiline has a weak affinity for MAO-A which breaks down serotonin.  The problem is that too much of this and it can be fatal.

This doesn't make any sense. Mucuna Pruiens, contains L-dopa. Taking an extract or the whole plant won't make any difference. L-dopa, is probably the safest way to take this combination as you are getting an exact dose. There is no benefit of this combiation that I know of and it is mainly used for sufferers of PD. I do not believe the OP has PD.

Fo-Ti: You don't want another MAO-B, as it will compete for the MAO-B enzymes, potentially making selegiline begin to be more partial for MAO-A in a lower dose.

Zinc: In high amounts is neurotoxic, search PubMed for Zinc neurotoxicity.

You also recommend a lot of DRI/NDRIs, which is not the best idea with selegiline. Too high of a dose, especially with a NDRI, could open the door for a hypotensive crisis, especially if the OP does not titrate upward. Excessive dopamine is not a good thing either, and could lead to psychosis.

I mention Mucuna pruiens over l-dopa, so that he didn't look to much l-dopa.  Also Mucuna Pruiens does have a testosterone boosting effect that L-Dopa doesn't have.

At what amount is Zinc neurotoxic? I was talking about 75 to 100mg. Here is someone's account of it:

As for Fo-Ti, thanks for caching that one for me.  I over look that it could cause Selegiline to be more MAO-A inhibitor.

As for why I recommend a lot of DRI/NRI, it was because I was under the impression he wanted to boost his dopamine levels.
