but why is it that magnesium is a good stack with zinc if zinc lowers magnesium? Is this to "supply" what magnesium has been lost from supplementing with zinc? i.e. to balance it out?

No, all that happened was your electrolytes were effected by your consumption of Zinc. You'll find it had lowered your Magnesium serum levels. Zinc is natrally a positively charged so is Iron and other salts, Magnesium is negative. Acid/alkali, electron donor/robber, anabolic/catabolic, trophic/atrophic. Lifes a bit more complex than this but you get the idea.

53mg zinc over 90 days did not induce copper deficiency but lowered magnesium levels in women (did not induce deficiency as they were taking 320mg mag a day but hindered levels I guess as less was being absorbed by the intestines). this also might be why the other poster mentioned epinephrine, as depleting magnesium can elevate epinephrine, especially if mag intake is low high doses of zinc often might lead to or worsen mag deficiency.
But short term megadoses of 80mg zinc lozenges might significantly speed up the recovery from colds by a few days. zinc acetate may be the most effective form. probably a good idea to take a slightly higher amount of magnesium during this time to make up for the lowered absorbtion. not mag citrate close to taking the zinc as citric acid may impair the zinc.
