Looking at old forum posts on niacin, I seem to be finding a great amount of articles both supporting and attacking niacin usage for general longevity. I've read multiple sources stating that it can be bad for your liver, and this post in particular has some discussion on niacin as possible factor in Parkinson's:

What are your thoughts? I was about to try niacin since I read it can increase libido, but to me there seems to be too many risks. Perhaps the risks are dose-dependent? If so, what it is the optimal dosage for someone who wants to take it just for general health and doesn't have heart problems?

Hey there, I hope you still need an answer!

I believe the risks are dose-dependent. Niacin is a vitamin (B-3), so we do need it! Taking a lot of niacin, however, may be harmful according to some studies (like the one you linked) to the liver. However, liver toxicity is usually due to the non-flushing kind of niacin (Niacinamide). I suggest taking the pure form.

Personally, I have taken lots of Niacin for a few weeks. I started with 100 mg/day and worked up to as much as 3 g/day. The flushing would slowly go away with tolerance, especially if I ate a lot before taking it. It kind of helped me overcome my anxiety, however, the results weren't great as the ones some people had with it (some claim to have cured depression by taking huge doses daily, something like 7g).

Hope this helps.
