Statins stimulate atherosclerosis and heart failure: pharmacological mechanisms.

In contrast to the current belief that cholesterol reduction with statins decreases atherosclerosis, we present a perspective that statins may be causative in coronary artery calcification and can function as mitochondrial toxins that impair muscle function in the heart and blood vessels through the depletion of coenzyme Q10 and 'heme A', and thereby ATP generation. Statins inhibit the synthesis of vitamin K2, the cofactor for matrix Gla-protein activation, which in turn protects arteries from calcification. Statins inhibit the biosynthesis of selenium containing proteins, one of which is glutathione peroxidase serving to suppress peroxidative stress. An impairment of selenoprotein biosynthesis may be a factor in congestive heart failure, reminiscent of the dilated cardiomyopathies seen with selenium deficiency. Thus, the epidemic of heart failure and atherosclerosis that plagues the modern world may paradoxically be aggravated by the pervasive use of statin drugs. We propose that current statin treatment guidelines be critically reevaluated.

I hope to see legal action taken against the pimps and producers of statins!

Maybe someone can post the theory/methods-of-action, that originally "proved" that statins could help with heart disease.

A post of mine has some relevancy: matrix Gla protein, statins, atherosclerosis, this:

Well, you can't prove anything with theory (except in math), but statins are one of the most highly studied classes of drugs that there are.  Here is a meta-analysis of a great many placebo controlled trials.  Statins reduce cardiovascular events in people with pre-existing CVD by 60%, and stroke by 17%.  At the same time, we know that they are not risk-less.  They are responsible for mitochondrial injury in some people, for example.  (We've seen statin-induced mitochondrial injury cured by c60oo)  Whether or not to use statins becomes a matter of balancing the likely risk with the expected reward.

Serious statin injury is relativly rare, but because so many people use them, there are a lot of cases.  It can ultimately be lethal in the worse-case scenario.

Turns out Logic was right about statins

After years of study, the BEST case scenario for statins is that they are useless. Only people with prior CVD events seem to derive some minor benefit.

Here is a recent review of why statins are probably not a good idea.

For whatever reason, perhaps someone told me early on in the statin era, that they were useless and probably harmful...I never fell for the statin scam. It has been embarrassing to watch some longevity advocates through the years - advocate for putting statins IN THE PUBLIC DRINKING WATER!!

Recently, a friend of mine was put on high dose statins and developed widespread chronic pain throughout his body - similar to millions of other people over the last couple of decades.
