I've read that curcumin may interact with prescriptions drugs the same way grapefruit does, Theracurmin has a half life of 13 hours. Would it be safe to consume theracurmin 12 hours away from prescription drugs? I'm wondering if the liver enzyme inhibition is still going on after several hours.

Curcumin inhibits p450 CYP3A4

The effects of grapefruit juice on the enzyme last up to 3 days. Assuming curcumin works similarly, I can not simply take it 12 hours away from prescription drugs.

Unfortunately, I have found that many other supplements do the same thing. This is very disheartening as I will have to discontinue giving my dad most of the supplements I ordered him.

DIM (enhances the liver enzyme)

apigenin
Lineweaver-Burk plot analysis indicated that apigenin and its dimer amentoflavone and imperatorin displayed a mixed type of inhibition on CYP3A4 or CYP2C9.
In addition, apigenin, to some extent, is a potent inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme

ginger (conflicting)

quercetin

reishi

boswelia (I read that it ihibits cy3a on some site, now I can't find it)

pomegranate

licorice

rosemary

sulphoraphane

I feel like this info should be more available, maybe a list of supps that interact with prescription drugs should be compiled stickied somewhere.

"All of those are in vitro studies in test tubes. There are no reports of drug interactions in the clinic. Often test tube studies are not confirmed in human studies because of the complexities of the human body. The test tube studies isolate specific proteins (enzymes) and then evaluate interactions. In human studies, circumin may never reach those enzymes, thus it may not cause any clinically meaningful interaction.

Negative research is rarely published ... but here is a clinical study with tumeric and 3 different drugs: http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/22725836
Results -- No significant interaction."

It looks like, overall, Curcumin seems to act as a CYP34A Inducer:

Possivle CYP2C9 Inhibitor as well:

http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/24517573

Be careful if you are taking things that are metabolized by these enzymes. It seems the exact effects are not 100% clear.
