"We've shown that when compared head-to-head, mice got the same benefits from a low protein, high carbohydrate diet as a 40% caloric restriction diet,"

Despite what the pop press story seems to imply, the actual study was not a lifespan study, but "a short-term (8 week) dietary manipulation on metabolic outcomes in mice. ... Ad libitum [low (5%) protein, high-carb] diets delivered similar benefits to CR in terms of levels of insulin, glucose, lipids, and HOMA, despite increased energy intake" relative to "33% protein; MPMC" and "60% protein, HPLC. Fat was fixed at 20% of total energy for all three diets."
This is a bit screwy on its face. Additionally, the mice started off at age 3 weeks — the absolute minimum age at weaning (most labs wait until age 4 weeks). So whatever this is, it's not related to aging processes, and may have something to do with basic juvenile development, including the physiology of a growing juvenile mouse.
