Effective supplements for PMS ?

I can see that there are not too many women on this website as nobody discussed supplements to eliminate PMS!

 

Has anyone had any luck relieving PMS? If yes, please share!

 

I am taking the following superstar supplements:

 

 

  • Magnesium 
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin Bs+ folate 
  • Evening primrose oil
  • Omega 3 fats
  • Good multivitamin 
  •  

Am I missing something?

 

The following herbs and phytonutrients are supposed to be helpful:

 

 

  • Chasteberry fruit extract (Vitex Agnus-astus) can help balance the hormones released by the pituitary gland that control your overall hormone function. Studies of over 5,000 women have found it effective. Take 100 mg twice a day of a 10:1 extract.
  • Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) and cramp bark (Viburum opulus) can help regulate cycles and relieve menstrual cramps.
  • Dandelion root can help with liver detoxification and works as a diuretic.
  • Isoflavones from soy, red clover, or kudzu root improve estrogen detoxification by boosting the activity of specific detox enzymes. They can be taken as supplements or consumed in the diet.
  • Flax seeds contain lignans that help balance hormone metabolism and block the negative effects of excess estrogens.
  • Chinese herbal formulas may also help. One of the most effective is Xiao Yao San, or Rambling Powder. It contains: Bupleurum Root (Bupleurum chinense), Chinese Peony Root (Paeonia lactiflora), Dong Quai Root (Angelica sinensis), Bai-Zhu Atractylodes Root (Atractylodes macrocephala), Poria Sclerotium (Poria cocos), Ginger Rhizome (Zingiber officinale), Chinese Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza uralensis),and Chinese Mint Leaf (Mentha haplocalyx)
  • Probiotic supplement.
  • Bioidentical progesterone cream in the last two weeks of the menstrual cycle. 

Can anyone recommend anything from the above list?

D3 and K2, eggshell powder instead of calcium, zinc.

 

I suspect in your case neurotransmitters are involved.

A little on the side of your question:

 

Fifty women with a failed trial of medical therapy(because of bleeding to much)  ......... were treated with a levonorgestrel intrauterine system. ...... Fifty-six percent of patients noticed considerable improvement or cure of their premenstrual syndrome symptoms;.......

Note that some doctors regard IUD as a possible abortion, and because of this will refuse to prescribe it.

I am taking maca. I am not sure if it is gelatinized or not. I don't feel anything from taking it.

 

Did you consider (gelatinized) maca ?

Speaking from a technical stand point, there are generally many different possible symptoms of PMS that seem to vary from person to person. Since the cause of PMS is unknown, trying to figure out what to take to eliminate it isn't really possible in that sense. You would have to mention what particular symptoms you were having, then it would be much easier to figure out what is best to take.

You would have to mention what particular symptoms you were having, then it would be much easier to figure out what is best to take. 

 

Irritability, moodiness, trouble sleeping.

It looks like something else is involved here... not neurotransmitters but hormones. I will try progesterone cream to see if it helps.

 

D3 and K2, eggshell powder instead of calcium, zinc.

 

I suspect in your case neurotransmitters are involved.

Hormones and neurotransmitters are very related and effects one each other.

 

It is quite possible low progesterone the cause of PMS.

 

  • Progesterone insufficiency (a CNS depressant by inhibiting MAO-2 leading to increased brain dopamine and stimulates MAO-1 leading to decreased excitatory neurotransmitters)
  1. Elevated estrogen inactivates the corpus luteum, where progesterone is produced
  2. Low LDL cholesterol bioavailable for progesterone production
  3. Excessive vitamin E (>600IU) lowers LDL cholesterol (lower doses stimulate progesterone production)
  4. Excessive animal fats/arachidonic acid lead to excessive PGF, which directly inhibits progesterone synthesis
  5. Insufficient vitamin E inhibition of arachidonic acid release (and thus PGF formation)
  6. Insufficient vitamin E effect as luteotrophin
  7. Excessive hepatic clearance of progesterone by synthetic progestin use or barbiturates
  8. Adrenal fatigue with insufficient progesterone production
  9. Hyperadrenia with resultant suppression of ovarian function via anterior pituitary response to the rapid oxidation
