In the topic: http://www.imminst.o...f=201&t=9573&s=
everyone can help to create the transcript of the ImmInst-Film.

For questions about the proceeding there, for problems and for discussions about the transcript we have this extra-topic.

note: In an old beta Version from 2005 the sequence of the DVD-titles was not

1,2,3,4,5,6..10
but
1,2,5,3,4,6..10

so that could be the reason, if you do not encounter your DVD-part on the position specified in the part-ID-tables.

Is the one on google the most current version? I could upload a different version and take down the old one if there is a newer version.

Also, when the transcript is complete, there is a place to put it in Google Vids, presumably so people can navigate through the video, get linked to it in searches, etc. etc.

I will try to contribute some to this project as time allows.

Aah, ok. Well the version I put on google was from the DVD that I got at the conference I think. Either that, or the one I got in the mail right around the conference (right before I think), so it is from November 2005 (or around that time). It is the only version I have seen, so I didn't know if one had come subsequent to it.

While I cannot contribute right now, merely doing SOME work will finish this easily.

Just record the times that you transcribed, and the words. Eventually, like the genome project, it will get done.

No one has a fancy voice-to-text software? Isn't that what Kurzweil does?

I just clicked on the link-summary of what's to be done. Good gravy. Matthias has already done a lot of work. Wow.

Yes, the time outline for all of the sections will be tremendously helpful. [thumb] I suppose we do them with the time stamps as shown, and then at the end we could convert them to the "overall" times that the google videos version uses?

voice-to-text software has to be calibrated with the original voices.
And nevertheless the manual correction of the errors would be the same effort as writing it without voice-to-text-software.

In the lists of the parts I used the 'overall'-time-stamps of the google-video already.

Can the current transcript be uploaded to Google now, and that way some key words are already available for searches?

Or if it's done once, it cannot be replaced?

It can be uploaded, and then modified whenever you want to modify it. It does, however, have to be in a format like this, so there will have to be a little bit of conversion from the way we are doing it to the way it needs to be (in other words, its not as simple as just copying and pasting from the forums). I was planning on doing some more transcribing tomorrow, when I do I will see how time consuming it will be to convert and whether it would be easier to do it little by little as we go, or all at the end.

HH: Hours starting at 00
MM: Minutes starting at 00
SS: Seconds starting at 00
mmm: Milliseconds starting at 000

Here's an example of how the time-coded transcript should appear:

9:54:50.000
Words said between 09:54:50.000 and 09:54:53.000
9:54:53.000
Words said between 09:54.53.000 and the next segment.
9:54:54.000
Words said at 09:54:54.000

Each timestamp is relative to the start of the associated video file.

in other words, its not as simple as just copying and pasting from the forums

If it makes it easier we can change the format in the forum. But then we will lose some information and everything from one part has to be written unfortunately in one line of text.

Hey! we have finished the first DVD-title! ..hmmm the first of ten...
without reenforcement from more volunteers this project will be hard to accomplish.

my email was now forwarded to the Italian, who needs to make a transcript too, so perhaps we will have some reinforcement soon.

Sweet.

As far as changing the way we are doing it, this way is fine, I converted the first title (parts 1-22) to the right format (and it did not take very long), and put it into the Google Videos version. If you click on it, and then at the top, you can click next to "Search: This Video" and if you search for anything within that first section, it will give you the time when it occurs and a link on the righthand side that allows you to go directly to that point.

That means that a search on Google videos for those words will gain a hit, too, right?

That's awesome, then.

Yes, I am pretty sure it brings in searches from regular Google Videos. I tried a few search terms and it seemed to be working. Also, it may help people that know of a part of the video they want to see, and dont know where it is. When all the transcribing is done, people can search through the video for key terms.

On http://video.google....761732541483047
there are some screenshots.
Are they random or could we upload a set of selfmade Screenshots?
I have selected good screenshots from every interview partner (its not easy while they are talking ;-)

I do not think you can change the screenshots, they are just equal parts of the way through the video (approximately every 17:30). Google just divides it into equal parts and takes a screen shot from each of those starting points.

btw, I was just looking at the statistics and there were 117 views yesterday which made the total views break 3000 for the first time, 3066 to be exact, which is pretty cool

Well, since the other threads were closed, I have a couple of questions.

1) Why was the project stopped? ("for some reason" didn't explain a lot)
2) Can we start it up again?
3) I have a partially done transcript on the Google Videos version, should that be removed?

I was kind of confused when I saw all the threads had been closed on the topic of transcribing.

Sorry, I made this step yesterday as a precaution because of some internal discussion.
I wanted to protect the work of idealistic volunteers from being used by commercial professional companies.

Ok, let's proceed now with this transcripting and translating project. It's important to have this film for free in more languages - as many as possible!

For parts 030 and 031, they should start at 0:19:20 and 0:19:34 respectively.

They are currently listed as 0:18:20 and 0:18:34 (1 minute off for each)

He has to familiarize himself with the forum first, then he will go on with 033. (and he has to use the google-video on his slow internet-connection, but he will have the DVD soon)

Part ID 038 needs revision. I think it is supposed to be attributed to "Cambridge BioGerontologist Aubrey DeGrey" and "that should not be tolerated in polite society".

130-137 retranslated without any ?'s, HTH. Some speakers really don't know what to say,
or mispronounce, e.g. keratectomy not "keratectonomy", 99% sure it's as correct as possible:

130 0:08:35 1:26:01 1. Christine Peterson
(Founder, VP, Forseight Nanotech Inst.)
The application in nanotechnology that people are
most excited about, is in medicine.
We picture extremely powerful medical applications, being able to analyze the
body down to the molecular level, do repairs at that level, and, in principle,
one could address just about any disease you could imagine, this way.

131 0:08:57 1:26:23 18. narrator-A: about Robert Freitas
Nanomedicine, a book series by Robert Freitas, that analyzes a wide range of
possible nanotechnology-based medical devices, and explains the relevant
science behind their design.
Freitas writes that the net effact interventions will be the continuing
arrest of all biological aging, along with the reduction of current biological
age to whatever new biological age is deemed desirable by the patient.

132 0:09:23 1:26:49 3. Robert Bradbury
You can sit here and discuss aging... and then, you know, ultimately I will
sit and discuss nanotechnology, because I view them as being, you know...
what I've I gotta get is, I've got to get five years, then I've got to get
ten years, than I've got to get twenty years for myself.
Now, if get that much for myself, then...

133 0:09:39 1:27:05 1. J.M. Salgado
(Founder, Project Life)
So, at the same time we find how we age, and we find a treatment,
we need to develop nanotechnology...

134 0:09:46 1:27:12 4. Robert Bradbury
That's right, that's right; I mean, ultimately, we'll end up with
nanotechnology. Ultimately, then, we'll give you a whole new genome.
Or, we do it with uploading/downloading, ...you know.

135 0:09:55 1:27:21 <<<<< Julian Huxley (1887-1975) >>>>>
2. James J. Hughes Ph.D.
Well, I date the history of transhumanism back to an essay by Julian Huxley
where he coined the term transhumanism. His idea was somewhat more expansive
than our contemporary idea of transhumanism. Back in the 1950's, he was arguing
that humanity should trascend itself, and consciously commit to transhumanism
itself; both biologically as well as socially

136 0:10:20 1:27:46 19. narrator-A: about Transhumanism
Transhumanism is an emerging philosophy analyzing of favoring the use of
science and technology, especially neurotechnology, biotechnology, and
nanotechnology, to overcome human limitations and improve the human condition.

137 0:10:33 1:28:00 3. Rudi Hoffman, CFP
That makes sense. The whole concept of augmentation clearly makes
sense to me. And I guess that... that kind of puts me in the middle of the
transhumanist/extropian/cryonicist movement. Many of us are, of course,
free-thinking libertarians, who believe in the whole idea that, you know,
that we should take what nature has given us, and move to the next level,
as we clearly do, I mean, most of us.
If our eyes are going bad, we don't just say, 'well, nature has given us bad
eyes', not doing anything better - we wear glasses. Well, in my case, I had
a radio-keratectomy, which is one of the better operations.

We are talking about, you know, different ideas, or crux points, where you
change your paradigm. Actually, I think, getting my eyes fixed with a -
at that time time - cutting-edge operation, ten of fifteen years ago, that
keratecomy, was a crux point for me, because I always had bad eyes, and,
all of a sudden a single operation - literally, it took about eight seconds -
and my eyes... I woke up the next day with perfect vision, actually better
than perfect vision.

And some interviewees with a very American pronunciation or with background noise were hard to understand for Veneto and me (like part 111).
