Hi,

I am looking for opinions on a question relating to the current state of research into ways to counter/negate the "ageing" in humans. Could anyone give me her/his opinion on the question below?

"What is your opinion? Is it even possible to completely stop (or even reverse) all negative effects of ageing in the human body, so that one might live in a youthful body for an indefinite time (centuries or even more)? In other words, is it attainable through science extend lifespan and preserve youthful physical condition for 500-1000 years or more?

(It is the second part of the question below which really interests me)

If this is possible, do you know of any current research which is targeting this specific goal? If there is research in this direction, what is your estimate? How long will it take for science to fully realize this specific goal? (less than 10 years or more? more than 20 years?)"

I know that there is no sure answer to the above, so even  personal opinions/guesses would be more that enough.
I very much appreciate your opinions, and look forward to reading them.

Sandor

Aubrey DeGrey has been pretty aggressive on predicting reversal of human aging relatively soon. You can read more at SENS.org. Also, we have a podcast where I interview a lot of people who make predictions. Michael Shermer thinks it is too complicated and it will take a lot longer to reverse aging. http://www.longecity...ory/7-podcasts/

You can also read about Ray Kurzweil's predictions. He essentially thinks that aging will be cured in the next 20 or so years.

Personally, I think we will have significant evidence that some aspects of aging can be reversed within 5 years. Full rejuvenation is probably 15 years away, but less than 25 years.

Yes. It is definitely feasible, more so every day.

With a change in the industry mindset, this would be possible within a decade. But everyone has an investment to recoup, so it's going to take longer. The best we can hope for is government to buy up all the intellectual property at a fair price, make it public domain, and encourage the industry to work together moving forward to a specific goal such as by implementing a Manhattan Beach-like Project (develop the cure for aging the way they developed nukes).

If that doesn't happen, it will certainly be possible within the time frame of the life extension optimist, but it will be a long time before the price comes down. After that there is the matter of sustainability. We can pump you full of drugs to keep you from aging or to make you age slower, but we're going to need to see a revolution (and a revolution after that) in gene therapy before we just don't have to worry about it anymore. I think with a few years of study and nice big budget, I could get you to maybe 500 with genome optimization... but who knows how much that would cost to bring together that much tech... I have a feeling it would be a billion USD a head.

In the mean time you can sign up for cryonics. Is Budapest far from Moscow? They are the most established cryonics company in Europe, the only that I'm presently aware of actually.
